Content Creation Milestones

At the end of 2013, I looked back, and I realized that I kept a resolution that I stipulated a year prior to blog at least once a day. To say that I learned a lot would be an understatement of a large degree. I was thinking so much more about why I do things, I sought the opinions of other bloggers and what they wanted to accomplish with their writing. With my focus on photography, I had lots of content that I had not written about as these events and projects were progressing. I thought that I would need to dip into that pool of projects to keep going when new ideas or images were not made throughout the year. In fact, I still have a list of things that I have not blogged about event after a year of daily postings.

There are a few content makers out there that really crank out posts multiple times a day. I knew that I could not do that being just one person. When would I have time to make new photos? There are many photographers, writers, comedians, sports reporters, that blog articles daily. It took me a while to see what they were doing, and to jump in myself. This was despite the fact that I would read their content multiple times a day. I knew I had some things to contribute, and I had a WordPress blog already setup. It was only the commitment that was needed to really get the ball rolling. It is now a part of daily routine. If it is getting late in the afternoon, I feel the tug of the keyboard to get something down. It is as much for me as for anyone else that happens to come across the site.

For everyone that has come across my posts and written comments and urged me to continue – Thank you! To all the writers, photographers, podcasters, and other content creators that are sharing their creations online with their audiences – Thank you! I hope that I can contribute more than noise to the online community. I love creating and sharing new images that hopefully get better as I write and analyze the photos over time. And it is my hope to make them better each time I hit the “Publish” button.

Illuminada

This post is dedicated to my aunt. She was my father’s sister that visited us often. Her brothers treated her with the respect that all good brothers show to their oldest sister. Compared to her, my dad was outwardly more energetic, and seemed to bring more attention to himself with loud laughter and funny stories. Tia Nada, as most called her, was more reserved in her actions, but she had many of the same personality traits underneath the surface. She too, had stories that could get the group going, and her humor fit right in with all of her siblings.

From snippets of stories of the old days, it was Tia Nada that first met my mother. They both worked in the same hospital and became friends. Since the workplace was in Tia Nada’s town, it was natural for my mom to be invited to and meet the rest of the family. Who knows where I would be, or IF I would be if this circumstance was different!

I remember her as a gentle, yet strong and independent person. My mother could depend on her to help with her business if her regular assistants were on vacation. She could help with keeping her books, she helped to cook during our family reunions, and she even helped us move our things to a new house.

Tia Nada lived for a long time in Toluca Lake, California. While at home, she kept up with the headlines and all of the news of the celebrities in Southern CA. She would recount all of details of the OJ Simpsons trial when we call her. (C’mon now, every family has at least one person that followed the whole story!) She called us to make sure we were watching the Opening Ceremonies of the 1984 Olympics in her city. And driving through her neighborhood, she could give you her own tour of famous people’s homes, no map needed!

This always seemed to keep her younger in my mind. I admired her strength in challenging times. She relied on family, but we also relied on her. I hope much of her spirit survives in us after knowing her.

Photography Websites

It has never been easier to share your photos online. I can remember in the first years of the web how magical it was to download photos. Using a web browser was so easy. Comparatively you had to download individual files from a gopher or FTP site. Then open the photos in a separate JPG or GIF viewing program. With the browser, you had an experience that was much easier to view a collection of photos in an album-like setting.

Now, social media networks heavily encourage the sharing of images online. With the price that Facebook paid to acquire Instagram, it is not surprising to see where they see the most participation in their users. With all the social networks, though, there is a tradeoff for photographers. Because all of these networks are free to sign up, participate, and share, the companies need to make revenue somewhere. YOU and your photos are now the currency that these networks use to grow their business. In some small parts, they are taking your photos and using them to get more people to share and participate, and they hope, get them to patronize their advertisers.

To take more control over this natural give and take, I believe all photographers should have their own web space that they are paying for, and maintaining themselves. It has never been easier to reserve your own domain name, and sign up with a web host with all the gigabytes of storage you need for a minimal cost. If you are bothered by these social networks “stealing” your images to use, this is the best way to display your photos online. I post a little on these as a way to drive traffic to my personal website!

Speaking of which, my portfolio website is currently undergoing and exciting revision! I am switching over to a new service for showing off my best images. I will post more when the transition is finished, and I would love to hear what my blog readers think of the changes!
