Sunflowers – Dynamics

Music Direction

When I was four years old, my mother took me to my first piano lesson. This would be the start of 16 years of formal training in music. Many good lessons learned that translate to photography. One of my first lessons that I learned after getting my hands on the keys was how loud to play. The small “p” is musical notation for softly, quietly and the small “f” is the opposite – play loudly.

These are noted when the composer wants a change from how loud you were playing just before the notation. I remember it being more difficult for me to play quietly than to pound away on the keys! The concept that was taught from very early on was dynamics. It starts very simply, teaching student to play quiet or loud, but changing how loud you play notes increases the contrast that the audience hears in their ears. It expands the dynamic range of the music making it more interesting to listen.

Photography Dynamics

In photography, contrast is always a setting that you can adjust either in camera or in software. Increasing contrast in a photo will make dark parts of the image darker, and light parts brighter. Just as in a piece of music, the increase in dynamic range will make the photo more interesting to view for the eyes. Here is an example from our trip to the McKee-Beshers sunflower fields which illustrates the concept. This photo is how the camera captured it with default settings:

This is how most camera would capture the scene as you walked out into the field. It gets all the information, but there is no ‘pop’ out of the frame. With any photo editing software on your smartphone or computer, you can push the contrast in the frame:

With just that simple change, the image is already a step above what most people will post online from their point-and-shoot cameras and cell phone cameras. It does take a little effort, but it is worth it to make your photography stand out a little from what it posted out there.

Since I had the time, I took a few bracketed exposures to make a high-dynamic range image of the sunflower field. This really increases the local contrast of each of the colors, and gives a more surreal representation of the scene. I tried to make it a little closer to how your eyes will see the scene since the human eye can see much more range of brightness than the camera. I think it came out well!

Happy Birthday!

Chinese Checkers board

Happy 75th birthday to my mother! I know she is busy today hosting family, opening birthday cards, and answering phone messages from all over the place. She has always been one of the hardest working people I know – taking care of her patient’s medical issues, providing for her family large and small, and making sure I didn’t mess up too badly while I was growing up could not have been easy. It makes me strive to be better at what I am doing because she was able to do so much with what she was given.

All around town her old patients still stop her to say hello, and catch up with what has been going on with them since she retired, and what happened to all the babies she delivered during her career. At one point, she had collage made from the baby photos that were sent to her office. She ended up making 3 – four-foot framed pieces, and there were still photos left over!

She is now happily retired and has taken to many hobbies – reading, learning to use the internet, and photography. She used a 16GB on her last trip! Yes, I try to help her with photos, but it’s mostly hardware. She like to borrow my lenses – here is her self portrait in my left eye!

Yes, she still has a large porcine collectible library, and she loves to challenge people to Chinese Checkers. Be prepared to bring your ‘A’ game, it is no joke to try to clear your side with her blocking your every move.

But she is always finding new things to try, never scared to experiment and try new things. I wish her a happy birthday and look forward to many more!

Photographic Gifts

It is my mother’s birthday on Monday! I have given her many photo gifts as you can imagine – from canvas prints, to albums, to prints mounted into frames. This year, I am giving her something that she requested a while ago. She really like to send out greeting cards for birthdays and holidays, but she cannot find ones that have lines printed on the inside for writing. It seems like this would be something that would be easy to find! So for her birthday, I made some custom cards. The photos were of flowers from the garden at her house that her brother manages. He is quite talented with caring for these – I am trying to learn his tricks! Most of the printing houses online can print both the outside and inside of cards in case you want to add text to the inside of the card. Instead of text, I just added a page with lines that my mom could use to write her notes.

Then, I made some covers for the cards with the flower photos. I took my longer than I want to admit to make sure the flowers were on the correct side as they were folded. It was not until I saw the cards delivered that I was completely sure I did it correctly.

I also wanted to ensure that they printed well on the paper. Optical prints are printed on photographic paper, either matte or glossy, and I am familiar with how my images look out of Lightroom translated to that kind of paper. The cards are pre-press printed onto card stock. Check with your lab before you print to see how to setup you software to soft proof how they will look prior to ordering. There are some slight change you may have to make in contrast and sharpening to ensure a good transfer. These turned out nicely! I hope my mom enjoys them. Maybe I’ll start a greeting card business line.
