Analog Efex Pro 2 – Tech Thursday

Post Processing

There is a proliferation of images these days. Affordable digital cameras, and smartphones has made photography so accessible to so many. Looking on Flickr, one of the most used social networks for sharing photos shows that the 4 most popular cameras used in its community are iPhone models! With so many of these similar cameras in use, it is easy to see why Instagram, VSCO, and other filter apps are popular. They all have filters that allow users to easily change the default image coming out of the camera. There is enough in these apps that you can drastically change an image right on your phone prior to sharing. This adds to the popularity of taking and sharing images online.

For professional photographers, these kinds of tools have been available in Photoshop and Lightroom for many versions. The difference to me is the ease of use. The complexity of these programs keeps photographers from taking advantage of these tools. Lightroom does come with presets that can give your images different looks by applying adjusted sliders to an image. Instantly you can get a different look by changing color, contrast, or any of the sliders in Lightroom.

Some functionality you cannot get in Lightroom includes adding frames edges, creating double exposures, or adding grunge with layers. This is a function that is typically done in Photoshop which is not really my specialty. That is where Analog Efex Pro 2 from the Google Nik Collection. This is a plugin for Photoshop that allows you to make changes like adding dust, grain, and light leaks. You can also add a grunge, or sloppy frame that makes your photo look like it was taken out of a developer bath in the darkroom.

Analog Efex Pro makes it easy for you to made adjustments using sliders. There is no complicated switches or menus that you encounter in Photoshop, so it makes it easier to experiment and try different settings before finalizing your image. I’ll post more about this new program as it is really in depth as to what you can do. It is very powerful, and a great tool to add to your post processing.

Arthur Murray Chevy Chase – Rumba Professional Show

Chantilly, Virginia

Today’s post features photos from a Rumba pro show by the Arthur Murray Chevy Chase studio. Overall this studio consistently has a professional couple perform at the end of these events. It shows that they are supporting each other by helping and observing their practices. Above all, their shows are entertaining for the audiences. This show in particular incorporated steps that are taught in the studios to the students making it accessible and relatable to the audience.

The skill in performing these figures is what separates it from our practice steps! Their swivels, keeping their feet position correct – these subtleties are what makes this a show that you would review as you aspire to improve your dancing. Additionally, I hope to keep such a strong core body position in dancing Rumba. Many of the figures have such similar components that it makes it difficult to lead in a way that the lady can follow easily. In this performance, these two were both strong in keeping their position making for some especially nice lines in the photos.

This weekend we are preparing to take our photography on the road. We are going to make another collection of dance photos, so going through our last event is helping me get into the dance frame-of-mind. I am hoping that we can setup the lighting in similar positions given that I liked the results. The balance between the front and backlighting for these was perfect for the floor this size. Concurrently, the back lighting was not too strong to flare in the camera, and the front lighting was even across the floor. It allowed me to just concentrate on following the dancers, and made the post processing very fast.

Arthur Murray – Tysons Corner – Foxtrot

When a Foxtrot comes on over the speakers, I think of relaxed, smooth almost walking steps across the floor. This professional show, like many of the others that we shoot, was much more of a showy display than what we do during practice – as the shows should be! Luck would be with me for making images from this performance.

We have covered the DC Area Arthur Murray events for a few years now, so many do not even know that we are regular students at the Tysons Corner studio. In addition, these two are our regular instructors, so we do have an affinity for them, and would have been cheering along with the crowd if we were not working! That disclaimer aside, I think my favorite images from this event came from this show.

Of course the dancers are well-practiced, and they pulled the performance off nicely after some trouble with getting the correct music track to play. I also placed myself in what I thought would be the best spot to get the dancers by sitting across the long side of the floor with the studio banners in the back of the frame, and the flashes positioned in the back were in a spot to not flare too much from my position.

But really luck is what really allowed me to get this awesome photo of the two of them in mid-air!

Even when you are shooting quick action, you know when you may have captured something cool. You may not have time to look at the back of the camera, but you know by the timing, there is a good chance you have it. This frame was a complete surprise! You can still make out that they are dancing, but there is an abstract element that really makes it stand out to me. I may have to print this one out large to hang at home. This is definitely an early contender for my favorite 2014 ballroom dance photo!
