Sheer Dance

USA Dance Mid-Atlantic Championships - ©TimeLine Media

It is always nice to see your work published in places other than your blog! The latest issue of Sheer Dance Magazine has some photos from the USA Dance Mid-Atlantic Championships. There were dancers from their local area that competed. With this in mind they requested that some of my photos be used to accompany their story. I am adding this to the collection!

Magazine Photo Prints

Thanks to the publishers that run this magazine. They were up front with their request. Photographers are very nervous about having their work stolen online, but sharing work is the best way to get your name out there. If you are a publication that is looking for good images, please do not steal work from photographers or other artists that work just as hard to produce the work in the first place. It can be mutually beneficial to reach out and discuss what both are looking for in exchange for usage.

I have found that being open to opportunities to share work has really opened a lot of other avenues for me. It shows that I have a good collection of images spanning a length of time, and it gives confidence that I can go and create more strong images in the future for prospective clients. Having additional reach through publications is really an important marketing piece for photographers, and I encourage others to do the same. Share your work with as many as you can! You never know who may read an issue, and remember the impact that you images create.

Triple Swing – Professional Showcase

Arthur Murray - Alxandria, VA - ©TimeLine Media

Who is ready for a triple swing? In reviewing old blog posts, I found that there are still some professional shows that I have not posted about from the Arthur Murray Fall Showcase. There was a large number of shows from this event! To be sure I do not want to leave any of the dancers out! They are too nice to ask when their featured photos will show up. With this in mind I have gone back to make note of which ones I have not blogged yet.

Today’s show was a triple swing performed by the Arthur Murray franchised dance studio in Alexandria, VA. They danced to a popular song at the studios – “Lollipop.” I recall dancing a showcase routine to this a few years ago – it has a quick tempo requiring you to keep steps compact. It is also a challenge to dance at that tempo for the entire length of the song which these two did very well! They even though in a lift in the middle just to up the ante even more. The fun lollipop prop and dress really brought out the whimsical feel of the dance that the audience responded to nicely.

After post this, there are only two other shows from this event that I have not posted on the blog. I am thinking about having a Facebook poll about the photos from each show. We only have a limited space to hang posters from the previous event’s professional shows, so we need to narrow down the candidates soon. Stay tuned here to find out more on how we decide to print these. Thanks!

Photography Endurance

USA Dance Mid-Atlantic Championships - ©TimeLine Media

Many photographers blog about the challenges they face in the genre of work in which they specialize. As an event photographer that primarily focuses on making a large amount of images at events, endurance is a challenge that I confront both during and after the shoot is over. In this last event, we had some other issues that we have not encountered before during the weekend, and it added to the stress and work while we were on site. After pushing through, it was really satisfying to find that the photography quality did not suffer, and we did not lose any image data from 2 full days of shooting.

After the event, it takes a lot of endurance to go through each of these photos. If a photo is not in focus, no one will ever see it. If a flash did not fire, no one will ever see it. Then, adjustments and crops are made to each so that they look great on the website! You need to be able to see the faces of the main couple in the photo. After all of these are completed, the photos have to be organized by dancer number. At the Mid-Atlantic Championships, we are lucky to know a lot of the dancers by name.

Trying to get all of this done within a week, then have all 9000+ files uploaded to the website takes a lot of effort – late nights, early mornings, and having some computer working on some part of this process going on while working on another. Rest assured, I let everyone know as soon as the website gets all the  photos ready to view. This time, the push to get this done really wiped me out, and my body caught some bug. I am recovering now, but it is so much nicer to have a lighter schedule to answer emails, put in orders, and work on some new photos from last weekend! Maybe I will have to improve my endurance since we will have a lot more events this year.
