Happy Birthday!

Chinese Checkers board

Happy 75th birthday to my mother! I know she is busy today hosting family, opening birthday cards, and answering phone messages from all over the place. She has always been one of the hardest working people I know – taking care of her patient’s medical issues, providing for her family large and small, and making sure I didn’t mess up too badly while I was growing up could not have been easy. It makes me strive to be better at what I am doing because she was able to do so much with what she was given.

All around town her old patients still stop her to say hello, and catch up with what has been going on with them since she retired, and what happened to all the babies she delivered during her career. At one point, she had collage made from the baby photos that were sent to her office. She ended up making 3 – four-foot framed pieces, and there were still photos left over!

She is now happily retired and has taken to many hobbies – reading, learning to use the internet, and photography. She used a 16GB on her last trip! Yes, I try to help her with photos, but it’s mostly hardware. She like to borrow my lenses – here is her self portrait in my left eye!

Yes, she still has a large porcine collectible library, and she loves to challenge people to Chinese Checkers. Be prepared to bring your ‘A’ game, it is no joke to try to clear your side with her blocking your every move.

But she is always finding new things to try, never scared to experiment and try new things. I wish her a happy birthday and look forward to many more!

Washington Monument Birthday!

The Washington Monument was dedicated on February 21, 1885. I guess that makes it the 127th birthday of the unmistakable landmark that greets visitors to the capitol city. The height restrictions on buildings in the city make it the most visible and identifiable marker, and it makes for a great backdrop for photos from the White House to the cherry blossoms, or even from across the river in Virginia. I’ll have to refresh my collection of images that include the monument next time I have the chance.

This image was one from a walk around the National Mall on a beautiful spring afternoon. With the clear blue skies, and strong sunlight, strong shadows were on the sides opposite from the sun. Adding a darkened vignette on the edges helps to emphasize the monument.

Although the structure looks basic, it can change its looks drastically throughout the day. On this occasion the up lighting below nicely highlights the edges in the setting sun. Since it is such a recognizable monument in the city, it gives you plenty of opportunities to set its location from you entire collection.

Fun times!

It’s always great to revisit old friends. Mike and I worked in the lab for a long time, getting through a lot of challenging projects. We’ve gone through a lot of changes since our last assay, so it was great to catch up!

Fun times celebrating a birthday in Gaithersburg, Maryland

On this occasion, Mike invited us out to celebrate his birthday. We previously worked together in a laboratory. Likewise we had a lot of fun times while working. Although we both studied in the sciences, we have departed from that line of work. From what I can see, Mike is doing very well!

At the time we worked in the lab, I thought I would work there for my entire career. However, you grow and progress in an organization. Sometimes when promoted, your new position is not a great fit. This was the case for me. I was better in a lower position, but as never comfortable as a manager. That being the case, I struck out on my own with my creative endeavor. My mom says that the universe will find a way to put you where you need to be. As far as I can see, this is the truth so far!
