An Olympian Visits

Nancy Kerrigan will likely come to mind when you think of ice skating. She made the USA proud with her efforts on the Olympic teams in 1992 and 1994. For the first holiday season that Tysons Corner Center has their Plaza open to the public, they have a large ice rink installed. To open the rink for skating to the public, they had a show featuring some area ice skaters, and Nancy Kerrigan. What a way to open this exciting new installation!

I was inside covering other events inside the mall as I posted about previously. So I asked a photographer Nick Tettey from JB Elliott Photography to help me get photos of the ice show. To see his photos of the event, you can visit the Facebook page of Tysons Corner Center. I came outside to catch the end of the show which gave me the opportunity to see Nancy skating live. To see a professional that has practiced performing for large crowd for most of her life is a gift. You can tell the muscle memory she has built to do such complicated movements and to make them look effortless.

Meet and Greet

After their show was done, Nancy and her skaters came inside to get some nice photos together. The stage set up in the Concourse was a much better setting for photos than the very dark and cold ice skating rink setup out on the Plaza. So I setup a large strobe as high as I could get it on a light stand. From here, it was very easy to get nice photos of the group together with Nancy.

She was very generous with her time. Lots of people wanted to come up to get some selfies with her, and she did so nicely with everyone that waited to see her.

At the end of the event, Nancy took a lot of time to meet with an older gentleman that came to ask her what the event was about. In explaining all of his buttons that he wore on his jacket and hats, he said that he used to be a pilot that used to fly Air Force One! Nancy humbly told him that she used to skate for the USA. I really enjoyed seeing her interaction with him and how she succinctly summarized her amazing career!

Pentatonix!!

If you are a popular music fan, you have probably heard of the a cappella group, Pentatonix. They came onto the scene when they competed and won NBCs competition show, The Sing Off which had groups from all across the country come to compete each week. Being a fan of a cappella groups from before this current craze began, I really gravitated to watching the show. In college, I spent all my extra time rehearsing with my a cappella group, and all my extra money on CD and tape recordings of other groups.

It was a very exciting opportunity for me to photograph Pentatonix as they came to perform in the Concourse of Tysons Corner Center. Since it was in the holiday shopping season, they performed some holiday his for the crowd. If you are unfamiliar, a cappella group produce all of the sounds using their voices as the only instruments. They can produce all the backing tracks as well as percussion sounds with their creativity. This adds to the interest when listening to this style of music to see how they interpret and create these sounds with just their mouths!

As part of the holiday celebrations at the mall last year, Pentatonix walked through the HGTV Santa set to look through the Elf village and visit with the big guy. After their visit, they went to the Concourse where a GIGANTIC crowd was waiting for them to perform! This was the most amount of people I have ever seen gathered for an event at Tysons Corner Center. They were stacked almost all the way down to the end of the Concourse almost filling in the width of the space!

Thankfully, Nick Tettey from JB Elliott Photography was there to help me cover this with me. Once I was in position right at the front of the stage, I could not move, so Nick helped me to get some other angles with the crowd a little further back in the crowd. Pentatonix did not disappoint in their singing either! They really sounded amazing, and they got a great reaction from the crowd that came to see them. Luckily there was no problems even with all the people that gathered to see them. Thanks to the mall security that had a great plan for keeping everyone safe and able to enjoy the music!

Christmas in July at Tysons Corner Center

The Plaza at Tysons Corner Center during the holidays

Let’s celebrate Christmas in July! I am clearing out my photos from my computer and I came across these from the complete opposite end of the calendar. Even though we are in the middle of the summer concert season at the mall, the holidays are the most colorful and may have even more visitors than summer days.

One of the largest differences in these two times is the shortness of the days. The early sunset really makes it easy to get some blue-hour photos of the center. Blue hour is what photographers use to describe the time after the sun has set in the horizon, and the approximately the next hour. During this time there is still plenty of light in the sky and it is usually a beautiful blue color especially in the winter. This makes for a beautiful backdrop for holiday lights.

But the cold is perfect to keeping the ice in the rink ready for skaters!

And of course, we cannot forget about Santa Claus! He is one of the hardest working people at the mall during the season. He has the traditional portrait sittings at his set in Fashion Court, but he also has several other appearances over the two months leading up to Christmas. He has the Santa Breakfast, along with meet and greets throughout the center. I love to see the reactions to Santa whether young or old, and it always makes for a great photo.
