Back to some dancing! Featured today is a professional show by the Arthur Murray – Tysons Corner, Virginia studio. At the Fall Showcase event, Carlos and Lauren closed out the day by performing this lovely Rumba.

This was a smooth routine to Robin Thicke’s “Teach U a Lesson”. My wife photographed the video above, which gives me a chance to actually enjoy the routines! I can see the spots where I could have taken more photos of the show. Why didn’t I take them? Maybe I was not going to chase the photo, maybe the angle was not as good from the part of the floor where I was standing.

Sometimes, though, I gauge the vibe of the room, and it changes how I shoot. When the routines are high energy, and the crowd is readily whooping and encouraging the dancers, I feel very free to join in, throw the shutter, and let the flashes go. In this routine, the dancers really had the room’s attention in a more intense and concentrated feel. Part of it is the choice of music. This R&B groove seems like it has been pulled from a darkened lounge, where the dancers are not performing for an audience. They are dancing as though they are in a more intimate setting where they are not trying to draw attention to themselves, so the audience responds in a similar way – keeping their applause and noise to a minimum. I feel that, and try not to interrupt that with noises from my camera.

I was still able to get some cool photos from their show! The feel from this was seen again when they performed this during our studio’s weekly party. The feel was much the same from the dancers and the audience there too!

Chasing Photos – Tech Thursday

Sports and photographing action or events share similarities in the way you approach achieving the end objectives. The one I am writing about today is chasing photos. A quarterback in football that is known as a “gunslinger” takes more chances when he passes the ball. He will pass the ball in more situations where there is a lower percentage of success. Or he may overthink or outsmart himself. The overestimation of his abilities will enable him to complete a pass that has a low chance of getting to where he wants it to go.

Being an action photographer, I have similar problems when doing a long event shoot. For ballroom dancing, there is no shortage of action to get in the frame. Sometimes, though, I “chase” photos. I think that I can get my long lens to frame up a composition that I know is coming up. I am not the most experienced ballroom dancer. However, I have seen more than my fair share of dancers. I think I can anticipate when a specific line is coming up, and when the dancers seem to be lining up perfectly with my perspective.

Chasing Photos

Much like a gunslinger, this approach to photography can yield spectacular results! Unfortunately, this can also lead to missing some easier shots that were right in front of me, but I missed because I was chasing another photo. What I do now is to mix my technique while shooting. Only after I am sure the guaranteed shots are in the camera do I start to go for more unconventional photos. It allows me more freedom to be creative after the documentary or standard shots are done. I feel like I have completed my job for my clients, now I can move to other photos that I will add to my portfolio for later. If only my favorite football teams could do this…

Arthur Murray – Fall Showcase – Columbia – Rumba

I have just about finished with all the orders from this big shopping weekend. Firstly, thank you to everyone that visited the website to view and purchase photos from ballroom dance events that TimeLine Media has covered this year! The most popular event to view of course was the very recent Arthur Murray Fall Showcase. The day was a blur with all the activity, but my photographers and I made some great photos from morning until night. The event ends as all of them do with a showcase of the professional dancers that instruct the students at the studios. The first show that I’ll highlight on the blog is from the Arthur Murray – Columbia, Maryland studio:

We have seen these two in lots of shows and routines over the years, and we were happy to see them perform together again. In fact, they are in the middle of our first ballroom brag book that we created as a studio demo from a show that they performed some time ago. This routine was a beautiful rumba with some nice lines. The challenge for the rumba, keeping balance through moves that work the hips was displayed very well in this show. It can look deceivingly easy to dance except to the audience full of dancers that have all tried this style.
