Needs Improvement

©TimeLine Media - Piano Keys

In my corporate job, “Improvement Needed” or “IN” used to be the lowest rank you could receive on a review. Yes it does not sound good, and is in fact very discouraging. It was meant to be a sign to the person receiving the score that they are the lowest performer. Subsequently it will likely push them out the job to something else, or out of the company completely.

Work Review

As a freelancer, it seems like I do nothing but look at where I need to make my skills better. I look at things like photo shoot setups, camera technique, composition, post-processing, etc. Then there are business things – my contracts, marketing, website – it is really an endless list. Looking back on where we are now, it would be possible to think that everything is setup just as we like it. However, I am constantly thinking it needs improvement.

I do see a correlation between my view of my work, and the work that is done by my photography subjects. I revisit many venues and events. It is easy to see the progress artists put into their craft in between the times that we see each other. It inspired me to come up with new ideas. My setup cannot be the same as the last time. It would look like I am satisfied with where I am, and what I am doing. This pushes my photography to improve every time I go out on a shoot.

Use weaknesses to push you off the plateau and get to the next level. Yes, a photographer needs to have good gear, but you need to have something in the frame that will hold viewer’s attention. For a singer, singing in key is the prerequisite, but singing something that people want to hear will bring you to the next level. More shoots are on the schedule, hopefully more improvements will be made!

Sunday – Rest Day

Not much rest this last weekend. It was a beautiful funeral and birthday party for Liza yesterday. The gathering of family and friends at the church and my mother’s house to celebrate her life was reflection on Liza and her love of life. She would have loved the party! So much food! So many people from her work and both sides of her family visiting and eating. It was her kind of scene. Only a few substitutions made the celebration different. Instead of dancing, there was a quite time for prayer and remembrance. We hope Liza approved of the arrangements.

Friends and Family

Not dog tired yet, but we will rest and recharge. Towards the end of the day, I was getting too lazy to change to big glass even when there was a bald eagle flying right over head in a perfectly clear sky! But I still tried before regretting it.

That will be an upcoming post for sure – missed photos.

I have more shoot planned in the next couple of weeks. There will be some portraits, action portraits, some shows, and we will get back to dancing at the Arthur Murray Fall Freestyles next month. On the Facebook pages and announcements, the studios are gearing up for the event, and planning the themes for the Potomac Cup team match! I’m sure there will also be some unexpected surprises along the way. This was definitely one from yesterday:

Editing Monday

©TimeLine Media - 2013 Salsa Bachata Throwdown

I have a lot of photos in the editing room today! My schedule is filling up with shoots for the early fall, both client and personal work. It has been enjoyable to email with people about their upcoming projects. There are ballroom dance events, fashion runway shows, as well as personal and professional portrait sessions. It is also a big season for weddings, and parties as we get to the end of the year.

If you are planning a special event that you may need photography, please send me an email ( rassi @ timelinedc.com ) or give me a call 703-864-8208. There are many venues and other vendors that I have worked with so I can help if you need suggestions in planning. Of course this blog is where I showcase my work, but I also have a portfolio website at www.timelinedc.com that I am currently updating and editing. Every website should be updated regularly, but my newest photos will be here on the blog first!

As a reminder, one of the events I covered earlier in the year was the 2013 Salsa Bachata Throwdown in Rockville, MD. The photos will be expiring on the website today, so they will no longer be available to view after tonight. Love the energy and athleticism in these photos! Well, I need to get back to editing.
