Sunflowers at McKee Beshers WMA

Poolesville, Maryland

Taking a short drive to the nearby Maryland countryside to stand in a field full of sunflowers will probably become a yearly tradition for us! Like the cherry blossoms around the Tidal Basin in downtown DC, the fields of the McKee Beshers Wildlife Management area are planted with beautiful sunflowers. When they bloom is regularly monitored and posted on their website. Not as many people make it here compared to the Tideal Basin. So you can really get up close and personal with the bees and the blooms.

Since they bloom in summer, it is recommended to go either in early morning or late evening. Concurrently, it is better when the sun is not directly overhead. This, of course, makes for better photos too! The spacing in between lines of plantings makes it easier to walk in between the rows of blooming flowers.

We decided to go out later in the evening. Being July, it was still hot and a little humid, but we enjoyed the colorful view. There are many fields in which sunflowers are planted. However the first one off of River Rd. is probably the most photogenic. As you walk from the parking lot, you can see the yellow glow of the flowers between a column of trees. It is like stepping into an Impressionist painting.

It is such a great place to make photos. You can take out your wide-angle lenses, your macro lenses, practice with your tripod, or take your flash off the camera for more fun. Luckily you have lots of space to work and not be in anyone else’s way. There is still some time to get out there and see the sunflowers. According to the website, there are other fields that may bloom from now until August. Grab your camera and a friend or two and make some nice pictures!

Cherry Blossoms Part 2

Tidal Basin

The time for the cherry blossoms decorating our streets has now passed. I had a note to go back and post more from this time since I made a lot of images by the Tidal Basin in downtown DC. It was the latest that the blossoms reached their peak with the extended winter that we had in this area. Luckily, we were treated to a great display that was perfect for photographers from sunrise to sunset.

These images were from sunrise by the Jefferson Memorial. There were many other photographers right around me, but everyone was very careful to stay out of everyone’s shots. I staked out a place high on the hill in between some cherry trees to attempt the often-done Memorials through blossoms. This is the first time I had attempted it so early in the morning. I will be making an effort to do this every year from now on!

Washington, DC

The golden light just before sunrise was especially strong in this area. With the height restrictions on buildings in Washington, DC, it allows for sunlight to reach the monuments and memorials without being obstructed. This particular morning, the clouds were kind to stay away for a little while after the sun broke through the horizon so everyone that was there this morning had perfect light. The strong orange sky was complimentary to the pink blooms making for a different color combination.

Later in the day, the blooms are against a bright blue sky background. Most cherry blossoms images have this combination – classic and very good on film!

Now different flowers are starting to bloom in the area. Azaleas, dogwoods, and soon the roses will start to bud. I’ll be sure to have my camera lenses cleaned and ready for them!

Earth Day

I am a day late on the Earth Day celebration of our planet and the efforts of the modern environmental movement. Similarly to other photographers, photos of nature from flowers, and landscapes are a popular subjects. Take Ansel Adams, Galen Rowell for example. These nature photographers have inspired and continue to inspire those that are passionate about capturing their world. Moreover, these images are made to preserve scenes for future generations.

Spring Blooms

Our world needs to be conscious of how we are affecting the natural systems with advances in technology and our growing population. With all the coverage of the missing airliner in the Indian Ocean, the search has been complicated by so much floating trash that confuses humans and satellites that are combing the area. Undoubtedly, there is need to find, refine, and deliver fossil fuels. However, there are impacts to the environment that needs to be managed by companies, governments, and everyone concerned with preserving a healthy planet.

I admire the many nature photographers that are capturing environment today to help illustrate the effects that we are having on the world around us. With this in mind, John Paul Caponigro and James Balog come to mind. Their images of animals, glaciers, and alien-like landscapes really give you a sense of how diverse, connected, and beautiful Earth is. It makes no doubt in my mind that their work will influence decision makers of all kinds. There has been so much progress in my lifetime, but clear that this is a drive that needs to continue. The continuing observance and support for Earth Day initiatives is encouraging! Here is hoping for more good decisions for a healthier world.
