Throwback Thursday – Dance Photography

After every dance event that we photograph, there are people that request photos from an event that we may have covered years ago. It is really interesting to go back and retrieve these old images! This is obviously nothing new. That is the magic of #TBT, Throwback Thursday, and photography in general. It is a new process for me as a professional photographer. These photos are not just snapshots of family, or places I have visited. For the most part, I do not know these people. They are dancers that we saw at only this event. Or maybe they stopped dancing soon after this competition.

Sometimes, though, there are people that have stayed with dancing, and still show up in our collections today! They are much better dancers, they have much better dresses, or costumes, and are now seasoned veterans to dancesport competitions. It is so much fun to find these connections in looking through old images!

From behind the camera, it is interesting to see my own changes. Just like the dancers improving their steps, there is an evolution in how I am capturing images. Yes, there are some technical changes as camera bodies are changed, but I like the more creative changes. I shift my lighting setup, I move my perspective to the dance floor, and I stylistically change my compositions in how I like to capture dancers.

Sometimes, I have gone back to some old techniques when I review these. Maybe some tweaks are added here and there, but it is a cool part of the process of really concentrating on making images. There is still so much I want to learn and improve on with my photos! it is a struggle to be sure, but looking back really helps me to see how I have already improved, and pushes me to find the next level with an upcoming opportunity.

Arthur Murray Fall Freestyles Uploading | Dancesport Photographer

It has been a busy week with lots of photos to process, but we are in the home stretch! All of the photo editing from the DC Area Arthur Murray Fall Freestyles has been completed, and the files are now uploading to the website. There are close to 6500 photos from last weekend, so it will likely take until later this afternoon/evening until the photos are ready to view. If you would like to know the instant that they are ready to view, you can subscribe to the email list at the bottom of the page, or you can Like TimeLine Media at the Facebook page. All updates on the photos will be posted to your wall. You can also add your name to the email list by going to the proofing page:

http://proofs.timelinedc.com

When you click on the placeholder for the Fall Freestyles, you can add your email address there. I will send out a notice to the list once the images are ready to view. I promise not to send updates there more than 3 times a month!

Going through the photos was a lot of fun – so many great images! As a team, we did have a lot to overcome over the two days. We had some setbacks and triumphs, but in the end, we delivered a great collection from event. If you were there, you know that we have a new tablet system for previewing the photos. Of course we had issues getting a new process in place to have them up, but we are hoping it will be even better in the future as we iron out the bugs. I hope that you visit the proofing page later today to see all the photos, and I hope that you share and enjoy them with your dance instructors, friends, and a family. See you at the next one!

Foxtrot Professional Show | Dance Photographer

Runaway winners of the poster contest was this image from the Arthur Murray – Ashburn, VA studio:

Arthur Murray Posters

It received close to 60 votes at the TimeLine Media Facebook page! It was great to see so many people sharing and liking the photo. I confess that was one of my favorite posters too. It was a fun show, and the dancers did a beautiful job with the performance. In addition, my eyes really like the light green color splash from her dress, and his tie. Matching their color to the title for the poster really made it pop out from the rest for me.

The Foxtrot is always one of the smoothest of the smooth dances. The two of them display this walking feel in the images. Their knees are bent, with them staying low through the dance. It easy to differentiate these images from the Tango with its harder, straightened knees, and obvious holds in movement. These two really made the dance look like it flowed from one part of the floor to the next even out of the dip in the poster! To see all the photos from this show, they are still available at the proofing website:

Just as with all the staff members in the posters, these shows were performed after a full day of dancing with their students! They will gather again this weekend to do more at the Fall Freestyles. I will definitely have more photos to share with you on the blog after then. If you have any suggestions as to what to do for the next round of posters, let me know! I have a few ideas, but nothing is set yet. It may depend on how the shows and photos from those turn out. Thanks again to the Arthur Murray studios of the DC Area for having us cover their events again this year!
