UPenn Classic – postponed

All geared up and nowhere to go! I’m starting to feel like a bad luck charm. It was 2011, and we were preparing to go to the UPenn Clover Star Classic in Philadelphia, PA, the former name for this competition. Just like two years ago, the car was packed, the cameras were clean, but a looming snow storm postponed that event too! We still hope to cover this event if we are available at the makeup date. We hope friends, family, and everyone in the northeast stays safe and warm through the upcoming storm.

Being that we had our event cancelled due to snow, here are some appropriate images. We get snow here occasionally. Immediately after the snow falls is my favorite time to make photos. In light of the short time where the snow clings to tree limbs and bark you can create some fleeting images.

Below is an image made on actual film. This is a Kodak slide film exposure that was scanned to create a digital image. At this time, I no longer shoot film. The convenience and immediacy of digital is hard to give up.

Again, we hope to make it to the UPenn Classic soon!

UPenn Classic

2013 UPenn Classic

We are finalizing our plans for the first ballroom dance event for TimeLine Media this year. We are returning to cover the event for the Penn Latin and Ballroom Dance at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. This is an event that we first covered in 2009 when we were very new to photographing ballroom dance. Like us, it has changed and grown, and we look forward to this year’s event!

The last times we covered this event, there was so much energy in the room from all the dancers! With many college team in attendance, there were many friends cheering on their teammates. There were also some flags in the crowd to represent the sections from each school which makes the event unique compared to most others that we cover.

Venue

It will be held at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia, a venue which we have not been to previously. I hope to get in there early to get setup lights, and get an idea of where we can position to get the best photos. My style has changed much since the first time we went up to cover the event, but I’m interested to see how things have changed for me – both in lighting, and in composing photographs. I did use images from this event for a long time in my portfolio, and I hope to get more this year.

Event Details

With a full day of dancing scheduled, I’m estimating between 6000 and 9000 photos which will take about a week to process. Hopefully I can still post some blog posts during that time! To keep up with details as the competition approaches, you can follow the competition on Twitter – @UPennClassic13

After I finish editing the photos from the event, I will post them to the proofing site where I put all my other ballroom dance events-  http://proofs.timelinedc.com

2010 Clover Star Classic

Thanks to University of Pennsylvania Latin & Ballroom Dance for inviting me to photograph their upcoming event, the Clover Star Classic! We went to this event last year and had a blast! The collegiate competition is amazingly enthusiastic and athletic.

Combined with their creative choreography, the ballroom costumes really fly by as the shutter tries to keep up! This will be TimeLine Media’s first ballroom dance event of the year, and I’m excited about photographing more. Overall, I have a goal of making unique and memorable images for dancers this year.

Did you attend the event last year? It was our first time going up there, and I want to receive some feedback on the photos. Especially since that was our collegiate ballroom event, we did not know what to expect. Of course we were blown away by the professionalism and focus that the dancers put into their art. Moreoever, we know they are studying dancing while doing a full course load of classes! For this reason, we are looking forward to see what the dancers have been working on since last year.

I’ll post some of my favorites both on this blog, and on the newly created Fan page for TimeLine media which can be found at this Facebook link.
