iOS Camera Improvements | Tech Tuesday

There has been a lot of excitement lately with the new iPhone 6 and iOS camera improvements from Apple. Even though I am not upgrading from my iPhone 5, I am enjoying using the new features that come from the operating system update. Smartphones are really quite amazing in what the programmers can add and change without having a change to the hardware. As a photographer that is used to having more control over the exposure, I like the ability to have more controls. Previously, you hold your finger over a part of the image to set an area to meter the exposure. This really helps to get some control over the brightnes in the photo.

In the new iOS 8 version of the camera, you can still specify a point to get a meter reading. Now, an additional control has been added. To the side of the box that pops up after you select a metered area, there is a sun icon that appears. You can then move that sun up to increase the exposure, or down to decrease the exposure from that point. This really came in handy as we walked through the amazing displays at the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

The glass that they use for display is so clear. You can put your smartphone right up to the glass without getting bad reflections through the lens. They also control the amount of stray light coming in with their darkened rooms,. This really puts the animals front and center. With the new exposure controls, I could ensure that the meter readings were taken from the bodies floating in the water, then took down the exposure. This helped to make a faster shutter speed to keep the subjects sharp, and helped to pop them out of the background. This was probably my most re-tweeted image yet!

Busy Week | Virginia Photographer

New Jersey State Open

Back to work this morning! It has been a busy few weeks, and I am still catching up with all the photo shoots and requests that have come in to the studio. The weather has taken a dip in temperature, and the colors in the trees have started to come out! We have been out taking photos of all the colors before it becomes too cold to go outside. From inside, there are a lot of things going on. We are preparing for a trip to Atlantic City this week to cover the New Jersey State Open.

There is a change of venue this year, so we will be setting up at the Bally’s Atlantic City. Although registration is now closed online, there is still time to call the organizers to dance this weekend. There have also lined up some great entertainment apart from the great dancing on Saturday night. We are excited about making a new collection of ballroom dance photography, and I will definitely show some of my favorites here on the blog when we get back.

That’s Dancing Showcase

Also on the website, there is a collection that is expiring today. The dance photos from the That’s Dancing Summer Showcase from last June will be removed after midnight. This is the last chance to view and purchase prints or digital downloads from this event.

I enjoy going up to their studio to capture their choreographed routines two times a year. Their staff is creative in putting fun, entertaining shows while teaching school figures. They also do a great job with their efforts to have a theme for all their showcases. It helps to tie in all the performances, and the audience is involved in the activities between dances. I am sure they are hard at work for their upcoming Winter Showcase pieces!

Wedding Throwback Thursday

It’s our ten-year wedding anniversary today! As I recall from etiquette books, the traditional gift is an electronic web log post. DONE!

I can’t believe it has been that long. We have done so many cool things over our marriage so far – probably why it seems like the time has flown. How many football games have we seen in a stadium? How many dance steps have we learned? Oor at least are familiar with? How many places have we traveled and visited on long plane trips, or shorter car rides?

Thanks for sticking with me through long photography assignments and other bouts of creativity. You have helped to foster creative ideas for me and my photography. It would have been a much tougher time to get TimeLine Media where it is today without a good manager looking at the big picture while I’m editing through huge collections. I’m sure there are more just around the corner that I could use your help! The wedding was just the first of our large projects together. With all the ones we have faced since then, I am more convinced that there are not too many things that we could not tackle together. By the way, I need help measuring for dance pants.

I think we make a great team – here is to many more anniversaries!
