Snowstorm Time Lapse

With the largest snowstorm in six weeks approaching the area 🙂 I decided to try an intervalometer experiment to make a time lapse film. My cousin introduced me to the concept a few years ago, but this is my first stab at it.

time lapse video of snowstorm in Fairfax, Virginia

Starting at 9:30AM on Friday February 5, I set my Nikon D200 to take an exposure every 30 seconds while being pointed out my front window. I wanted to capture the falling snow, the traffic outside, and the eventual dig out. Overall, I think it worked pretty well! Although, I wish that I was able to get a better view of how many inches fell, and how high the snow pile was in front of our house after the many sessions of digging out our parking spaces and sidewalks. I hope you enjoy my little project! It helped to stave off the cabin fever.

Did you do any photo or video projects during the snowstorm? Maybe you had a similar experience with weather this winter. If you have any suggestions for me to set up for the next time, please let me know!

Snow Weekend!

Well we prepared for snow as best we could. There were warnings all week, and although we planned to attend the Clover Star Classic in Philadelphia, we decided to not go. Instead we make sure our home would be safe over the weekend. Luckily, the event was postponed. On account of the change, we had a chance for some photo opportunities. Of course we had to also put away the cameras and do some shoveling. Ugh. In any case, here are some photos from the weekend –

I think there’s a car under the snow here somewhere:

My car is definitely under here:

The snow covering surfaces gives the most unique photos from these storms. Although it seems to come down evenly everywhere, the piles show a different story. Of course, I thought about another time lapse, but I did not think of a new perspective from the last time. So, I just stayed in and waited for the storm to subside before getting out the camera.

Similarly to other storms, we had clear skies after the worst was over. It was undeniably far from warm, but the sun made it almost pleasant to be outside. How did you fare through the storms?

Holy Trinity Catholic Church

Last year, I photographed two weddings at the beautiful Holy Trinity Catholic Church building in Gainesville, VA. Father Peffley is frequently on the guest list at many Filipino parties and services at my old parish in Woodbridge. So, I offered to take pictures of their new building. Soon after, I am in the building scouting photography angles. On this occasion, he allowed me take amazingly detailed photographs of the empty sanctuary, fixtures, and stained-glass windows.

Some of these have been made into postcards that are available in their gift shop. For this project, I collaborated with a local print shot to produce the cards. Please support this parish by purchasing some!

For those looking to get married, they have detailed information on their comprehensive website. For photographers covering weddings, more details from the venue is always preferable. Although things will be busy on a wedding day, review the rules beforehand!

The stained-glass windows were created at the Dixon Studio in Staunton, VA especially for Holy Trinity. On viewing, these windows create a modern take on ancient themes of art and craft. The windows transmit beautiful colors into the building. Dixon will install the last of the windows soon. When they completed, I hope to complete the photographs of all the windows soon!

Overall, it is a beautiful place to get married. Additionally, there are many places nearby for bridal portraits, and fun shots with your entire bridal party. Thanks again to Fr. Peffley for giving me the opportunity!
