For Valentine’s Day, the Arthur Murray in Tysons held a 2015 Cupid Competition at their studio. Not all of the competitions that we cover are large, multi-studio, regional spanning events. Some are local studio events that give studios an opportunity to give the taste of these kinds of events in their own venue.

Carlos Hernandez, the manager of the Tysons location, had us come out to cover the event. With help from some photographer friends, we got both stills and video of the competition. They had Leonard Theiss come to judge the dancers so they could have some feedback on their dancing to review with their teachers later.

The staff at the Tysons studio was sure to make everyone feel welcome. They had a few more people in the studio than their regular week nights, so there was a nice energy there for the dancers. I enjoyed making photos of the students dancing with their instructors. I also enjoyed getting photos of the staff performing a professional show to end the evening. It was a nice progress check for dancers in the studio, and it gave them a chance to see what is possible for their dancing by watching their studio mates show off what they have been working on. I am sure that this experience will spur more people to prepare for and dance at their next Freestyles or Showcase event.

Happy Hour Headshots

Mobile Setup

To help boost my visibility in the local business community, I had a ‘Happy Hour Headshots’ event at the Auld Shebeen in Fairfax. The event was co – sponsored by my BNI chapter. As a way to increase the visibility of the chapter, we planned this event around inviting visitors and potential clients to attend and to get a new headshot as a benefit of attending.

BNI stands for Business Network International. Most business owners would say that word of mouth is the best way to get good referrals for new clients. BNI is a structured network designed to make that happen. The way that chapters, meetings, and the education that they have for members, they have a track record of really producing some meaningful connections. My group is the Fairfax Business Connection.

We meet every Wednesday for lunch. If there are some people that are in our network that cannot meet for lunch, the “Happy Hour Headshots” was a perfect way to connect with them later in the day. The members attended as well as some visitors from their network. Everyone had the opportunity to get some updated headshots, and we all built some new relationships in the process.

It was great exposure for me! I could practice both my mobile lighting setup, and my headshots process in a group environment. Some aspects were easier with a lot of people in the room, but it definitely made easier smiles with lots of friends in the room. I hope you can join us for a meeting or another networking event in the future soon!

Ice-Skating Fashion Show

Tysons Corner Center

If anyone asked me if I would ever photograph and ice-skating fashion show, I would ask them to check their globes. This sounds like something that would happen in Canada or Norway, not in metropolitan DC. But here I was last January covering a fashion show held on the ice rink on the Plaza at Tysons Corner Center.

If any of the models look like they are cold, they were! I know because I was extremely cold. And with the large buildings going up around the Plaza, the wind was also a player in the extreme weather! These models were definitely troopers going through with the show in these conditions like they were out on a beach in the Caribbean.

While the models were changing and getting a little blood back into their extremities, the audience was treated to some talented ice skaters! They have a similar look to the ballroom dancers that I have a lot of experience covering, but they move so much faster! They have beautiful lines and lifts that look so daring from the sidelines. I tried to keep up with the skaters, but I would love the chance to photograph them again now that I know a little more of what to expect.

When I was given this assignment, I definitely went in with only a small amount of confidence that I would be able to pull it off. I had a few more frames that were not worth keeping. I should not think of it as a failure as I know my percentage of ‘keeper’ photos was much smaller from the ice skaters. That is the challenge of doing action photography. There are so many difference conditions and circumstances that you would not have the opportunity to set things up perfectly for the camera. But you bring as much knowledge as you can as the music starts to play, and you do your best. I’m still looking for the next time to be much better.
