Last May, there was an absolutely perfect day for an Alexandria, Virginia wedding that I photographed. Ann and Barry planned a beautiful day from their ceremony at Good Shepherd Catholic Church. On this occasion, they had a priest that knew them for a long time. Being that, their ceremony was much more personal and made a real connection with the couple and their family.

Relaxing Afternoon

Following the ceremony, all of their family and friends went over to Woodlawn Plantation for an evening of lawn games, photos, and an early evening reception. At the front of the historic mansion, the guests had plenty of time to relax and visit. Also, tours of the historic home were also available. Indeed, Ann and Barry spaced out the time nicely for the rest of their day. We had plenty of time for them to relax after the high stress ceremony. Then, we started back to the serious job of photography!

Wedding Reception

A tent setup next to the mansion was the location for the dinner and reception. On this occasion, the weather was key in keeping everyone comfortable all evening. Consequently, the dance floor was full, and the happy photos of Ann and Barry continued all evening.

Thanks to Ann and Barry for having me and Nikolai cover their wedding! Without a doubt, they thoroughly planned their wedding to be relaxing for their schedule. Additionally, they had activities for their guests to mingle and taste the historic setting for the day.

Washington Monument

Updating Wall Art

Last May, I went to downtown Washington, DC to get photos of the Washington Monument. We are updating a wall art collection in one room. For that reason, I thought about grouping photos of DC monuments would fit nicely.

Now that I had an idea of what I wanted to create, I set out to make the photos on a clear evening. This time of day is ideal for what I was looking for. I did not want a late evening, or nighttime shot, but the middle of the day would not have the dimension I was looking to have on the monument. When the sun gets lower in the horizon, the shadows will be a little less harsh overall.

For these photos, I used the 24mm PC-E F/3.5D tilt shift lens. This is one of the sharpest lenses I have in my bag. Secondly, the shift function of the lens helped to correct the ‘falling away’ look of the very tall Washington Monument. As can be seen in the comparison photos, the straightened version is more accurate, and a different perspective than from the ground vantage point that you see.

Once I had the settings of the camera dialed in, I moved around the base of the monument. Sometimes the placement of the trees at the bottom surrounding park was distracting. In another case, the construction cranes from a museum going up near the monument was distracting. Finally, I just decided to shoot, and remove the crane out of the print in software for my final selection. It was a successful exercise to gain experience with a lens, and to shoot for a specific purpose.

Last summer was the first year for the Fresh Artists Summer Concert Series at Tysons Corner Center. This collection of musicians was put together by 94.7 Fresh FM . Overall it really helped to kick off all the festivities at the new elevated Plaza. Each performance was an exciting display of talent from the musicians. The crowds really responded by attending and enthusiastically participating in the performances. One of the most energetic acts from last year was AJ Smith who opened of Lindsey Sterling in one of the most attended performances of the whole series. There is no doubt that he introduced himself to a LOT of new fans that day.

I was really happy when he contacted me about the photos that I made of him and his bandmates that day. It turns out that like me, he is from the DC area, and would be coming back into town to perform at Jammin’ Java, one of the best local venues for live music. I offered to come out to get more photos of the band as they played for friends, and played some new compositions from this talented songwriter. Because I did not want to get in the way of the crowd during the performance, I came during their sound check earlier in the day, and was able to get some awesome photos of AJ and his band!

They worked really well together in just getting all their settings right for the show. The band sounded great, and the lighting/video backdrop that they had on stage really showed their professionalism. It was inspiring to see the effort and teamwork they put into their music, and I am sure grew their fan base even more after this night. I hope to get the chance to photograph them again!
