Last March we took another trip south to Richmond to cover the 2015 River City Ballroom Dance Competition. We really enjoy coming to visit Veronica and Lee for their event since they are so friendly and really treat us like part of their dance family. Therefore, we try to do our best to make their guests look great on the dance floor. They are the owners of Simply Ballroom in Richmond, VA. They have a nice core group of studios that come to support this event. It was held at the Doubletree Hilton in Midlothian, VA. There are some familiar faces from studios in northern Virginia that we see year after year. It is nice to catch up with familiar faces. Of course they have new dresses and costumes to go along with new routines.

Dancers come from Maryland, North Carolina, and other independent studios in Virginia. For the heats danced, they were evaluated by Kirill Gorjatsev and Daria Zotova of DK Ballroom. After dinner, Daria and Kirill gave us a great show to end the event with some inspiration. To highlight the professional performance, I changed the setup of the lights to be a little more dramatic.

Adding some grids to my flashes helped to keep the light controlled to a smaller section of the room. As a result, the color costumes that Daria wore to pop! During the dinner break, I really tested this setup to make sure that it would work. However, you never really know how it will go until the dancers get out there!

Earlier this year, we took a plane out of and back to Reagan National Airport. I accompanied my wife on a business trip. Since I can work remotely, it was a good opportunity for me to visit a new city. While I did have some photography work, I did find some time to go make some new images while there.

The first location on our trip was not far from home. Reagan National is the closest airport to downtown Washington, DC. During the time from checking in with the airline and boarding, the airport has a lot of possibilities to make architecture photos. The largest and most popular photos are made in the main terminal with its Jeffersonian Domes and long promenade.

Additionally, there is another great spot in the former Terminal A. Now, this section is a Conference Center and Historic Lobby as it no longer functions as a place for passengers to board airplanes. I have photographed some events in this space which is a showcase area for the DC area.

The large panoramic window provides a beautiful view of the airfield, the Potomac River, and shores of Maryland. Who doesn’t enjoy viewing planes as they take off or land? Maybe it heightens the anxiety for nervous flyers – lol!

On the flight back from the trip the good weather provided more opportunities for photos out of the window. The challenging approach to the airport follows the path of the Potomac River. On one side you may see the familiar sites of Washington, DC from the air, but this side I had view of Tysons, Arlington, and the Pentagon in Virginia.

All of these are so familiar to me from the ground but are really photo worthy from above. The fleeting time that you have above the area makes you hit the camera trigger much faster knowing there is no time to review them. It’s really time to spray and pray!

Today is the last day to view photos from the 2015 Spring Freestyles from the DC area Arthur Murray studios. Thank you to everyone that came to the website to view them! I know that they were shared around since we had a lot of questions about this event. If you know of anyone else that would like to see them, or to get one last look at them, you can go to this link:

To end this event, we had an awesome group of Professional Shows by the staff of the participating studios. This is some of the most challenging for me of the entire weekend! By time, I have all the lighting setup for the entire floor, so there are no technical issues with getting photos. But the dancers that are performing are a different level than the students that danced all weekend.

Part of the difference is the skill and talent level of the dancers. They dedicate more of their days working on these figures to perfect them. Also, the crowd that had their attention spread across many different couples on the floor throughout the weekend. Now, everyone concentrates on only two dancers which ratchets up the tension. They want them to perform well, and they are ready to react as loudly as they can at the end. It is an electric environment to make photos!
