Street Corner Symphony

This photo is one of my favorites from covering the SingStrong DC event. Street Corner Symphony performed there in 2011, and the organizers gave me great access to shoot all around the venue. This was a shot from just back stage during their performance. It gives a different angle from most of the audience. The streaming stage lights give add a nice element to the photo. At this time it breaks up the big black hole for the top 3rd of the frame. Additionally, there is a little view of the audience in the bottom part of the frame. I processed the photo to be a contrasty black and white reminiscent of classic rock musician photos from the 70’s and 80’s.

The coolest thing was that I had the opportunity to see Street Corner Symphony perform again this month at Jammin’ Java in Vienna, VA. Not only were they still as good as they were on the NBC Show, the Sing-Off, but they are still accessible and responsive to their fans. If you ever have the opportunity to see them, definitely take it! There will be more great singing this weekend at SingStrong, and I hope to make more great photos there again.

Street Corner Symphony

This will be just a quick blog post for this Friday. I am preparing all my gear for this weekend’s first ballroom dance event. I am more getting excited already, and can’t wait to get set up! But before the event, we will be heading to Jammin’ Java in Vienna, VA to watch Street Corner Symphony perform. They are an a cappella group that we first saw on the NBC show, the Sing-Off. They competed very well and came in second place. Soon after, they were the headline act at the SingStrong event in Reston, VA. I photographed their performance which showed off the talents that they displayed on TV. It was a terrific show, andI can’t wait to hear them again.

This weekend we will be shooting the USA Dance Mid-Atlantic Championships in Bethesda, MD. I don’t know if I will continue to blog updates during the event, but I hope to post at least something here, so stay tuned! After the event, I will go edit the photos, and post them to the photo proofing site at- http://proofs.timelinedc.com

You can go there now, put in your email at the event heading. I will send a notice to everyone as soon as the photos are available to view and purchase. I will only send out emails when there are specials, and when events are expiring. I’ll place other notices here on the blog. Have a great weekend!

SingStrong A cappella Festival

SingStrong 2012

This is a unique music festival held yearly at South Lakes High School in Reston, VA. The focus of the weekend is on a cappella singing – music made without instruments, only with voices. It may sounds restrictive, but much like haiku, the creativity that can come from making entire musical compositions using voices. In some cases you they use percussive mouth drumming, or foot stomping as well. All will amaze the listener! I was in a cappella group in college, and have spent most of my music budget since then on collecting my favorite collegiate, professional, local, national, and international groups.

In 2010, I asked the organizers if they would be in need for a photographer for their event. It has been a privilege to attend, and get some great images of all the performers. There are performances that are open to the public in addition to workshops for singers. Topics range from vocal performance for the studio, on-stage presentation, different styles of a cappella music, to legal considerations of recording and selling music.

Charitable contributions

The best part of the festival is that proceeds from ticket sales and the silent auction go to the Alzheimer’s Association. So you can support a good cause while enjoying this very creative musical form. I encourage you to go to iTunes to sample some of these artists. To get details on this year’s event, you can go to the SingStrong website [ http://dc.singstrong.org/ ] and get information on tickets and groups that are planning to perform.

Having the kind of access that the organizers gave the photographers really helps to make some unique and memorable photographs. I was able to go back stage, get in front during sound checks, and in the balcony to find places that others usually do no go. These are the kinds of photos I want to make, not snapshots that the crowd can get with their camera phones. I need to get these in order to show that investing in good photography is worth the price. If I am only getting shots that everyone can get, it is impossible for my work to stand out, and be recognized. This is a goal that every photographer strives to achieve, and I try to make on every shoot.
