It’s finally Friday! Do you have all your weekend plans ready yet? I am working on some ballroom brag books and other special orders that were placed this week, but I hope to take a break and get more photos to blog about soon. Today is a post is from the Arthur Murray studio at Chevy Chase, Maryland. This was a cool, flirty, West Coast Swing Medley professional showcase. Veteran pros Tavia and Austin showed off their West Coast for us! It looks so easy for them to do this challenging dance. I have tried a few basic steps and had to put it on the shelf for a while – my mind and feet are not quite ready!

These two have done lots of shows at the end of these events. Moreover my favorite ballroom dance photo of 2012 was from their Viennese Waltz performance. While I really like the photo, I am so glad that they feel the same way! They have quite a variety in the dances they perform, and I enjoy how their images display. Hope you enjoy them too!

If you were at this event, let me know what your favorite show was. Of course you can view all the photos at the website, but perhaps you can go from your memory. It would be interesting to hear the perspective from others in the audience at the same time.

Arthur Murray – Chevy Chase Professional Show

©TimeLine Media - Arthur Murray - Tango professional show

Today’s post is from the Chevy Chase professional show performed at the end of the Arthur Murray Summer Showcase. They performed a Tango with a beautiful traditional red dress for the lady. For me, I find it one of the more technical dances. Consequently, it is a difficult dance to do well. Comparatively it can look very similar to other dances if done without the nuances that make it a Tango. However, it is one of the best dances to photograph! There are serious faces on the dancers. Additionally there are sharp, precise movements in the dancer’s feet and head position, and there are usually vibrant colors in the costumes. Both dancers convey strength, and intensity which translates very well to the camera. This was emphatically the case in this show, and I think I was able to capture some of this in the images. To see the entire collection from this show and others performed that night, you can go to the proofing website:

As can be seen in the photos, Austin has a presence while dancing to involve the crowd. Since he has dance so many of these shows, he knows how to put on a show for the audience. From behind the camera, I appreciated the coordination of his shirt with her dress. Because I have been putting photo collages together, I automatically know what color to highlight with them! Additionally, there was some variation in the lighting of these photos.

This variation comes from the signal for the lights to flash. In some cases the back light did not fire creating a much different image. With a darker background, the dancers really pop out of the frame. Obviously, the light is hitting them directly while leaving the rest of the frame dark. This can result when I trip the camera shutter too quick for the light. Or the signal from the remote does not reach all the way across the room!
