Uncle Bernie

Sebring, FL

My thoughts and prayers are with my cousins from Sebring, FL who are honoring their recently passed father at a military ceremony this afternoon. Uncle Bernie served so many during his time in the Air Force and the Peace Corps. The time in the Peace Corps brought him to the Philippines which ensured he would be surrounded by Filipinos for the rest of his life. He was present at many reunions, parties, and weddings. He watched over his boys, and helped to host our family trips to Florida. We always had a place to stay as he welcomed the invasion by our large extended family to their town. Later, he would have a larger extended family with grandchildren and great-grandchildren that loved to play with their Lolo.

It is nice to have images to look back and remember my Uncle Bernie’s life. Anytime someone passes, I recommit to make new images of family and friends before they are gone. Make images, and share them while they are new! The value only grows as the years fly by.

Happy Birthday!

Chinese Checkers board

Happy 75th birthday to my mother! I know she is busy today hosting family, opening birthday cards, and answering phone messages from all over the place. She has always been one of the hardest working people I know – taking care of her patient’s medical issues, providing for her family large and small, and making sure I didn’t mess up too badly while I was growing up could not have been easy. It makes me strive to be better at what I am doing because she was able to do so much with what she was given.

All around town her old patients still stop her to say hello, and catch up with what has been going on with them since she retired, and what happened to all the babies she delivered during her career. At one point, she had collage made from the baby photos that were sent to her office. She ended up making 3 – four-foot framed pieces, and there were still photos left over!

She is now happily retired and has taken to many hobbies – reading, learning to use the internet, and photography. She used a 16GB on her last trip! Yes, I try to help her with photos, but it’s mostly hardware. She like to borrow my lenses – here is her self portrait in my left eye!

Yes, she still has a large porcine collectible library, and she loves to challenge people to Chinese Checkers. Be prepared to bring your ‘A’ game, it is no joke to try to clear your side with her blocking your every move.

But she is always finding new things to try, never scared to experiment and try new things. I wish her a happy birthday and look forward to many more!

July 4 photos

©TimeLine Media - dachshund portrait

It was a really hot and humid day yesterday! Typical July 4th for the DC area. I spent the day with some family but did not take a break from making some photos. Hope everyone enjoyed a good day off!

Animal Portraits

While on a walk out in the country, this beautiful yellow bird contrasted nice against the blue sky. Sometimes these elements come together easy for a photo! On this occasion, there was a complimentary color subject compared to the background. Additionally, there were no distracting elements with a cloudless sky. It can be that simple.

Coming back inside, I spent some time with some furry friends. Late in the afternoon, the strong setting sunlight made for dramatic lighting. When you pose a subject in strong sun, the background will fall of dramatically. As can be seen in this photo, the strong sunlight creates strong shadows on a face. This is similar to a bare flash head. For a dog’s face, this makes for a nice portrait. Always reward your pet portrait subjects with a belly rub!
