Last month, I photographed another event at 1st Stage – Food & – a TEDxTysons salon. In like fashion, this was a new venue for me to photograph. I emphatically appreciate the opportunity that Ashwood, Stacy, and Josh have given me in covering their events! Not only are they a fun photographic challenge, but it is a privilege to be in the room for these talks.

Speakers – Food & – TEDxTysons

Similar to other salons in spaces that are purpose-built for productions, this was a great venue for photos. Even though the theater lights can look painfully bright, cameras will take as much light as they can take! Moreover 1st Stage is built with a staircase through the middle of the room. Compositions with the logo and the speakers were easy to get for everyone! As always, please visit the TEDxTysons site for photos and videos from this event, and try to join us for the next one!

Merry Christmas!

The shopping, shipping, wrapping, and cooking is almost done! Merry Christmas to all of the supporters of our photography – blog readers, Facebook fans, Twitter followers, and everyone else that we have photographed this year. We are celebrating the season by giving gifts, spending time with family, making more photos, and enjoying the very COLD weather! We hope all of you are doing much the same.

This is a present from my mom to herself! Yes, I did help her pick it out. It has a nice snap to it’s shutter (like the all have) and lots of good upgrades over her old D40. My mom just wanted it because IT’S RED!! Plus, she wants to shoot video along with her photos. I guess I will be giving her the gift of photo lessons for the foreseeable future. I am sure that many of those will be future blog posts. The gears are already spinning as another year of blogging starts soon.

I have already eaten too much for this holiday, but I have been enjoying it! All the houses are full of the smells of the season. Too bad that cameras cannot capture that along with the pictures. I will do my best to capture some memories, but take a lot of time away from the camera to get more to eat! Merry Christmas to you and all of your loved ones!

Thanksgiving with the X100s

The Thanksgiving holiday presented another opportunity for me to learn more about using the FujiFilm X100s. This mirror-less camera was the only camera I took with me while visiting family. Traveling with this much smaller camera was very freeing! I did not have to keep track of gear, and it was much easier to move the camera around in right places like kitchens where lots of good food was prepared.

On this trip, I specifically tried to use the built-in on-camera flash. There is a tiny rectangle above the lens where the stroboscopic light comes out of the body. This is different from many DSLRs with built-in flashes in that this does not “pop-up” above the lens. Seeing this setup, I thought that this would create problems with red-eyes because of the angle of the flash and lens were almost the same. This was the case, so I would not recommend using this for portraits. There is a hot-shoe slot on the top of the camera body, so I will try using an external flash unit with this body if I need to add light while photographing a lot of people.

It is possible to use a slow curtain sync with the flash in order to mix the flash with the ambient light.  In this case, the flash worked well to add some blur into motion-tracking photos. I can see this being useful where direct flash mixed with a bright background can add some creatively blurred photos much like the motorcycle photos. This would likely have to be done with a manual pre-focus on the subject since the auto focus tracking in the camera is very slow. In what I wanted to capture at family gatherings, this camera suited me just fine!
