New Camera for Christmas – Now What?

Gear Gifts

A shiny new camera was a popular item in the back of Santa’s sleigh this year! If you were like my mom, it was an exciting gift to get, but one that will definitely be giving out goodies for more than just the next year. After unboxing, and making sure everything turn on, it can be overwhelming to think about what to do next. Do I read the manual from cover to cover? Almost never. Do I need to buy more accessories and things to add to the body? Usually. Do I change any of the settings on the camera before using it? Absolutely. Why would I do any of these things?

I would do what most kids do with their new toys. I would go out and play with it first! Take LOTS of photos with the new camera. If you had a previous model that was similar in type, you will be very comfortable with most of the layout of the control and the symbols printed on the camera. There may be some new buttons on there, but if you didn’t have them on your last camera, you will likely not need them on your new camera if you have not read about it yet. Most functions on cameras have not changed in decades. So it is likely that if you are used to a particular brand and how it displays functions, it will continue to do so on your new model.

New Camera

Taking lots of photos with your new camera will also get you comfortable with how it responds. If you left the settings exactly how it came out of the box, it will likely give you perfectly fine results. They may not look much different as images from a point and shoot, or smartphone camera, but they will be viewable, and will give you a starting point to play with the settings later. There is probably a lot of family, friends, and other holiday things going on right away, so don’t worry so much about the details with your new gear. Just start enjoying it by using it!

You have a lot of time to tinker with all the other fun that a camera can make when you are not stressed about the season. Just be sure to register the camera with the manufacturer before your lose the registration card, of the serial number rubs off the outside! That will ensure you get all the warranty and repair rights if something breaks along the way.

Photographic Gifts

It is my mother’s birthday on Monday! I have given her many photo gifts as you can imagine – from canvas prints, to albums, to prints mounted into frames. This year, I am giving her something that she requested a while ago. She really like to send out greeting cards for birthdays and holidays, but she cannot find ones that have lines printed on the inside for writing. It seems like this would be something that would be easy to find! So for her birthday, I made some custom cards. The photos were of flowers from the garden at her house that her brother manages. He is quite talented with caring for these – I am trying to learn his tricks! Most of the printing houses online can print both the outside and inside of cards in case you want to add text to the inside of the card. Instead of text, I just added a page with lines that my mom could use to write her notes.

Then, I made some covers for the cards with the flower photos. I took my longer than I want to admit to make sure the flowers were on the correct side as they were folded. It was not until I saw the cards delivered that I was completely sure I did it correctly.

I also wanted to ensure that they printed well on the paper. Optical prints are printed on photographic paper, either matte or glossy, and I am familiar with how my images look out of Lightroom translated to that kind of paper. The cards are pre-press printed onto card stock. Check with your lab before you print to see how to setup you software to soft proof how they will look prior to ordering. There are some slight change you may have to make in contrast and sharpening to ensure a good transfer. These turned out nicely! I hope my mom enjoys them. Maybe I’ll start a greeting card business line.

Sunday Break

Red-Dahlia-www.timelinedc.com

Has Spring finally arrived? We were out pulling weeds and getting the garden ready yesterday, so it sure feels very close! It has been a busy week, and today feels like a good day for a break from the usual Sunday. Happy Easter to all that celebrate, and thanks for stopping by the blog! I think I’ll try and make more photos today. Stay tuned to see if I come with anything good.

For this post, I went back to find some recent spring blooms that I have come across. Although it is not usually recommended to crank color sliders in your post processing programs, I could not help it for these. Are they over cooked to you? Overall, red pops in digital images, so it is easy to go overboard with it. However, I could not help it with the dahlia image. Perhaps the bright yellow center is a nice contrast to the surrounding color.

For the daffodils in the flower arrangement, it was not as much the yellow that I boosted, but the blues and greens. This is usually avoided in photos with people as it destroys skin tones. However, I like how all the colors mix together in this frame. Don’t be afraid to push the color!
