Tysons Corner Center

This summer was a celebration of 50 Years since the opening of Tysons Corner Center. In order to mark the occasion, the marketing team at the mall asked me to participate in an art project with Pindar Van Arman. To demonstrate the high – technology aspect of modern Tysons, Pindar programmed robots to paint photos of the Tysons area. With this in mind, the robots need a photograph as a base for the paintings, so I worked to get new images of the area. As a starting point, Pindar and I went to the Fairfax library image archive to find photos of the area from the 1960s that we could use as a reference. From these, we create new photos of the same areas, then the robots painted both for the project, Tysons Then and Now. I think it was a success, and you can still see the results hanging in the mall!

2017 Christmas in July

Tysons Corner Center

It is just about time for a 2017 Christmas in July post! It has been a couple of years since I made such a strange article on the blog. Given that I photograph in and around Tysons Corner Center so frequently throughout the year, I do not have to waste too much time pre-planning for photos.

Seeing that I am an introverted soul like many photographers, this kind of assignment I relish. Primarily, the branding of sponsors on the ice rink, the Hyatt balcony, and the other holiday advertising was the focus. However, this evening was particularly lucky in terms of twilight.

During another exterior photo session, I really lucked out with the clouds. In the hope of getting some nice sunset light on the buildings, I headed out in the late afternoon. On this occasion, my patience was rewarded as the light during sunset was spectacular! I could not have asked for a more perfect combination of clouds and color. I think these images will be useful for so many uses around the Tysons area.

Last summer, we spent a couple of days touring Zion National Park. Undeniably this is a place to exercise your photography skills. Surprisingly, I was happier with the photos from here compared to the Grand Canyon. In contrast to my shoot at the canyon, I was confident I had something memorable. The light at sunrise and sunset was beautiful against the tall mountains. Accordingly the deep blue skies were a nice compliment to the sandy colored mountains.

In the middle of the day, the hard shadows emphasize the crevasses against the mountain. Since it was not the best time of day to shoot, we did a lot of hiking at this time. Angels Landing was suggested by our tour guide as a challenge to complete. Seeing that I had not heard of this trail before, we researched it and attempted the long hike. To that end, we were treated to a breathtaking view from the top! Although the trail continued on, I did not have the courage to continue the section studded with chains. My fear of heights and my camera gear haul would not let me go any further!
