Last year, the marketing team at Macerich requested that I make some 2016 Tysons exterior photos of the mall. Unlike event photos at the center, have a large crowd was not an emphasis for these. The images would be used for directories chiefly, so identifiable structures would be the goal. Additionally, the images are planned to be used for an app guiding visitors through Tysons.

On this occasion, I was enthusiastic to do this assignment. The biggest challenge was going whenever the weather and the conditions outside were right. Specifically, I was looking for some interesting clouds. For the most part, last summer was good weather-wise, but cooperating clouds were rarer.

As can be seen in the Plaza photos, I caught some great clouds one July evening. Not only were the clouds interesting, but they made for some nice purple and blue colors in the sky! Hopefully you will catch these images on a directory or app at your next visit to Tysons.

Getting dynamic images of the 2016 shopping center media displayed at Tysons Corner Center was a regular assignment for me. Prior to these projects, these ads would blend into the background. Since I had to concentrate on finding these throughout the mall, I was astonished at how many there were!

Large hanging posters are the easiest to see walking through the halls to be sure. Their large print and graphics allow them to be viewed from farther away. Moreover their longer viewing distance makes them able to be seen for longer.

Although digital signage is starting to grow through the mall, these static displays still impact in ways that digital cannot. Now that the printing techniques for vinyl media is so much better, this elevator became a center piece. Fashion Court has a 2-level elevator that can be wrapped. As can be seen in these images, having two levels for one client dominates the space while giving ample room for product information.

Peter Pan

Last summer, a production of J. M. Barrie’s Peter Pan came to Tysons, Virginia. Tysons Corner Center sponsored the production by threesixty entertainment. Rather than a traditional theater, they built a big top tent! When the tent was almost completed, I photographed the flag raising. This was enticing the traffic around the tent that the show was almost ready to start!

Ten tons of rigging created the temporary venue. Before it was opened to the general public, Fairfax Board of Supervisors Chair, Sharon Bulova, introduced the production. Charlie Burnell, Founder of 360 Entertainment and Producer of the tour gave us a sneak peak of the setup. Surprisingly, they created at 1500 seat theater under the tent! In addition to a circular stage in the middle, a video screen above the stage would add to the visual elements of the play.

Due to their partnership with the production company, Tysons Corner Center displayed media for the show around the mall. In like fashion of their circular stage, some of their media was displayed this way.

Some of the actors made appearances during the Plaza concerts.

Peter Pan – Opening Night

Finally, I was able to see some of the full production on opening night. Whereas the tent and the stage setup was impressive as a construct, the final set with the lighting and video projection was amazing! Surely they transported children in the audience out of suburban Virginia to the place and time of Peter Pan.
