Best Gifts

I am so thankful for another great Christmas spent with family. There was so much good food to eat, and many gifts to exchange! Some of the best gifts are still related to photography. A new camera, or a new camera bag to hold all my stuff! Actually, I am enjoying going through some old photos. I sent a few of our old family slides out to be scanned. It takes a long time to do the scanning right, and the equipment can be hard to master.

Luckily, there are lots of places that you can outsource this. Luckily they were able to complete the job in time before Christmas. It was nice to share the digitized images with family while we had some time to relax and go through them. These old images definitely have more meaning as time passes. This makes me appreciate even more the job of being a photographer to help preserve even better images for people if I have the gear and the knowledge to do so.

I have plenty of personal images to go through after the scanning. These were all taken on slide film, so we did not see them as often as those that were taken with negative film, and then printed. These always stayed as slides and would only come out when my parents setup the projector, loaded them into trays, and displayed them on a projector screen. Sometimes we would look at them on a small slide viewer, but it was still rarer than looking through the prints. It has been fun to look at them again especially during the holidays.

Happy Birthday!

Chinese Checkers board

Happy 75th birthday to my mother! I know she is busy today hosting family, opening birthday cards, and answering phone messages from all over the place. She has always been one of the hardest working people I know – taking care of her patient’s medical issues, providing for her family large and small, and making sure I didn’t mess up too badly while I was growing up could not have been easy. It makes me strive to be better at what I am doing because she was able to do so much with what she was given.

All around town her old patients still stop her to say hello, and catch up with what has been going on with them since she retired, and what happened to all the babies she delivered during her career. At one point, she had collage made from the baby photos that were sent to her office. She ended up making 3 – four-foot framed pieces, and there were still photos left over!

She is now happily retired and has taken to many hobbies – reading, learning to use the internet, and photography. She used a 16GB on her last trip! Yes, I try to help her with photos, but it’s mostly hardware. She like to borrow my lenses – here is her self portrait in my left eye!

Yes, she still has a large porcine collectible library, and she loves to challenge people to Chinese Checkers. Be prepared to bring your ‘A’ game, it is no joke to try to clear your side with her blocking your every move.

But she is always finding new things to try, never scared to experiment and try new things. I wish her a happy birthday and look forward to many more!

Mother’s Day

©TimeLine Media

After the past few days, this is the best weather day we have had in a bit! Perfect time for Mother’s Day to celebrate your mom, grandma, great-grandma (I can think of at least one) and share the day with her if you are so blessed. I am getting ready to head out to see mine, so this will not be a long post. Wishing all the mothers reading this post a Happy Mother’s Day!

By all means, I am privileged to have known so many amazing mothers. My mom emigrated from the Philippines. Since she arrived here, she has been motherly to many of her patients. Given that I am an only child, she had plenty of time to keep her eye on me!

Additionally, I see other examples of caring, involved mothers from my cousins and other family members. In like fashion, my cousins have similar stories of their mothers guiding them as we grow up. Even though I did not grow up with them every day, I still have the same reverence and respect for what they do. Undoubtedly raising our generation could not have been easy!
