Fairfax, Virginia

Earlier this month, the Peterson Companies contacted me for a Sip and Shop photography shoot at Fairfax Corner. Because I have done a number of projects for the marketing team there, I looked forward to making these images with them. We met on undeniably the hottest day of the summer so far! Despite the heat and humidity, the models assembled were troopers and did not let the conditions show on their faces.

In the light of newly passed legislation you can now carry alcohol through certain sections of the property. Following the directions on this website, it is possible to enjoy alcoholic beverages in one of the most walkable shopping centers in northern Virginia. Fairfax Corner on the positive side, is very pedestrian friendly. Being that they have many restaurants that are participating, I can see this being very popular! Especially if we have more days that are as hot as the day of this shoot. Thanks to Joanna and Crystan for reaching out and helping me make these fun photos for their advertising!

Fair Lakes, Virginia

Happy 2016! During some time off for the holidays, I am blogging about some events from last year. September was the celebration of the Peterson Companies 50 year anniversary. As long as I have lived in northern Virginia, I have lived near, shopped at, or worked in a property created by them. Joanna from Peterson’s marketing has had my cover corporate events, property openings, and some other work at their centers. Thus, I was honored to cover this special event for them.

Being that their company has stayed in business for 50 years is an amazing accomplishment. Moreover, they have impacted the DC metro area with their projects transforming the development of the entire region. On this occasion it was an honor to photograph the founder, Milt Peterson who spoke to all the guests. Afterwards, the buffet from Silver Spoon Caterers was opened! Luckily the weather cooperated, and they had a beautiful evening at their headquarters for an event. Because of the good weather, the lawn games were very popular. Additionally, golf balls were driven into the lake! Although this was a company party, many coworkers seemed like family. Undoubtedly this contributes to their continued success.

Betco Block Factory

Gainesville, VA

The Peterson Companies had me cover an event at the Betco Block Factory in Gainesville, Virginia. This concrete factory was set to be demolished in a ceremony last June. Redevelopment is underway to make retail, hotel, and restaurant spaces there. It will join the Virginia Gateway center which has millions of square feet of retail space already.

Despite getting to the site very early before the building was going to come down I was nervous about covering the demolition. Given that it is much more difficult to use explosives, the building was brought down with excavators. Before then, beams under the building were torched so that the building would come down easier.

While that was going on, I set one of my cameras up remotely on a tripod. I positioned it a little closer to the building so I could stand much further away in a safe zone. Before leaving the camera on its own, I started the intervalometer on the camera. This allowed the camera to take a photo every few seconds automatically.

In spite of the obvious danger to the camera, I left it much closer to the building with a wide-angle lens. The series of photos that it took automatically, I stitched together into a time lapse video. I’ll post it and the end of this entry. Even though the camera got very dusty, there was no physical damage to the body!

Thanks to Joanna from the Peterson Companies for having my cover this unique kind of event! We have worked together on a number of events at Fairfax Corner. Compared to other events where things are created, this was a nice turn about! Though I am happy that I did not have any damage to the camera at all!
