A Cappella – The Sing Off – SingStrong

Reston, Virginia

This is the third season for the NBC Show ‘The Sing Off’ which airs on Monday nights. Being that I am a former member of Juxtaposition, a college a cappella group from Virginia Tech, I was automatically hooked on this show. (I spent a lot of my extra college money on CDs which has transitioned to a downloading habit!) When this show debuted, I was excited to have another vehicle to see new a cappella groups.

There were groups that I was very familiar with and some that I had never been exposed to performing. There was an audience for the show from the first season. Consequently, there were an uptick in the amount of internet traffic regarding this form of music. At this time, I was lucky to find out that an a cappella music festival was held locally called SingStrong. The organizers graciously gave me access to photograph the groups, workshops, and the concerts. All of the proceeds which were donated in support of Alzheimer’s research.

Performers

The featured performers were prominently featured in the The Sing Off including Nota in 2010 and Street Corner Symphony in 2011. This was an amazing opportunity for me to see what was new and upcoming in a cappella up close with the latest in techniques, technologies and musicians that are pushing creative limits and making amazing music. This season is the largest yet – more groups, more rounds of competition, and another episode is on tonight. Check it out, and if you are in the DC area, or love to watch live music, check out SingStrong for next year’s schedule.

DC Area Arthur Murray – Fall Freestyles

Tysons, Virginia

We are all packed up and ready to shoot the 2011 Fall Freestyles! On this occasion the venue is the Sheraton Premiere in Tysons Corner, VA. It will be another great event organized by the DC Area Arthur Murray dance studios. Although it has not started, we have a good idea on what to expect. Surely there will be enthusiastic students and instructors cheering on their friends.

Dancers will show off their hard work from the studio on the big floor. It is always a good time, and the dancers love to view their photos as we go through them. Obviously we can’t wait to get some great photos of the professional shows that cap the event on Saturday night. In general, I save portfolio images from these pro shows as they are the capstone for a weekend of dancing.

I hope to see you there! As soon as we finish photographing, I start the post processing which takes a few days. Photos from the event will be posted here by next week:

September 11

My father, an architect that arrived in the US in the early 1970s, would go on and on about the design and building of the Twin Towers. EVERY time we would drive to Jersey City to visit family, we would take time to view them from different vantage points. It made such an impression on me. I grew up looking forward to seeing them rise out of the horizon. In short, a trip to the New York – New Jersey area did not seem complete without some viewing of them. They fill the background of so many of my family’s photos.

Twin Towers of the World Trade Center before September 11 events

This is one I happened to catalog with my own photos. I hope Tatay doesn’t mind that I took one of his photos to add to my collection. While scanning through our collection of slides around the house, I found this beautiful capture.

Have you photographed slide film? Although this analog capture is not as popular, the experience of viewing a transparent positive chrome is wholly different. Comparatively, the light is transferred through the film before it hits your eyes. Thus it has a different quality to it compared to the digitally projected images from a computer monitor.

It is for this reason that it adds to placing the image from a different time. Subsequently, the September 11, 2001 events that changed the fate of these buildings also places this image into history. So that inspired this post today. Coming across the image was wistful for the lives that had past, the terrorism revealed, the family rituals that have changed. However, it also reinforced the power of photography. To preserve, remind, and protect memories of what has come before.

I remember my father, his passion for architecture, photography, and enthusiasm that he passed on to all of us on my 35th birthday.
