Rumba Professional Show – Arthur Murray

Tysons Corner, VA

Back to some dancing! Featured today is a professional show by the Arthur Murray – Tysons Corner, Virginia studio. At the Fall Showcase event, Carlos and Lauren closed out the day by performing this lovely Rumba.

This was a smooth routine to Robin Thicke’s “Teach U a Lesson”. My wife photographed the video above, which gives me a chance to actually enjoy the routines! I can see the spots where I could have taken more photos of the show. Why didn’t I take them? Maybe I was not going to chase the photo, maybe the angle was not as good from the part of the floor where I was standing.

Rumba Showcase

Sometimes, though, I gauge the vibe of the room, and it changes how I shoot. When the routines are high energy, and the crowd is readily whooping and encouraging the dancers, I feel very free to join in, throw the shutter, and let the flashes go. In this routine, the dancers really had the room’s attention in a more intense and concentrated feel. Part of it is the choice of music. This R&B groove seems like it has been pulled from a darkened lounge, where the dancers are not performing for an audience. They are dancing as though they are in a more intimate setting where they are not trying to draw attention to themselves, so the audience responds in a similar way – keeping their applause and noise to a minimum. I feel that, and try not to interrupt that with noises from my camera.

I was still able to get some cool photos from their show! The feel from this was seen again when they performed this during our studio’s weekly party. The feel was much the same from the dancers and the audience there too!

Snow and Ice!

©TimeLine Media - December ice storm

The news this passed week was full of stories about snow and ice blanketing most of the US as winter weather moved across the entire continent. In just watching the football games on TV yesterday, there were so many teams playing in wet and snowy conditions. Here in the DC area, we finally received our part of the storm, but we did brave the conditions to cover our previously scheduled events. This morning, though, we are having intermittent power issues, so I did not want to risk losing photos and work, and have shut down the computers for now. I went out and took some photos of the icy trees and other structures in the area as I looked for a warm place to work.

There are some beautiful scenes out there with the ice still coating all the trees! The branches have highlights making them stick out from the shadows as the sun hits them. Unfortunately, this is why the power companies are working hard today – there are many branches coming down with the added weight. All the images were from what is becoming my favorite camera these days, the Fuji X100s – it just works! I’ll have my frustrations on a future blog post. Enjoy these images in the meantime!

Noise and High ISO – Fuji X100s

Washington, DC

I received a few emails about my recent posts about the X100s. It is a deceivingly good camera. Altough it has the form factor of a small, point-and-shoot camera, it has many of the controls of a larger camera, and can be just as complex to use. With the smaller body, many of the functions are more menu driven as there is just not that much space to add buttons or switches on the body. This can slow down your shooting if you have to change settings frequently, but they have tried to build in shortcuts. There are specific buttons that you can assign to settings that you access more frequently. The Fn button near the shutter release can change ISO settings very quickly in lieu of a dedicated ISO button on DSLR bodies.

Noise

Speaking of ISO and noise, this camera also has a big advantage over smartphone or point-and-shoot cameras. Behind the lens is a large APS-C sensor which is equivalent to the sensor size of many popular DSLR cameras. The larger the sensor, the better the low-light performance of the camera. A few have asked for some 100% crops of photos at the higher ISOs. Here is an example of the night time shoot at the Capitol building.

Even at 100%, the noise is not terrible especially considering the ISO is up to 800. This is also with the default noise reduction settings from Lightroom. If I were to print this image at a size higher than 16×20, I would have to do some more work, but at anything lower, the noise would not be viewable from a normal display distance. Another thing to note is that the photo above is sharp event at 100% with a shutter speed of 1/15th! It is much easier to hand hold a smaller, lighter body at slower shutter speeds.
