Nina and Dmitriy Kovalenko – Professional Dance Showcase

What way to finish a great day of dancing! Nina and Dmitry put on an exciting showcase for everyone at the end of this year’s Baltimore Dancesport Challenge. The crowd, being very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about Latin dancing, really got into the five pieces that they presented. Today’s post is from the first of the five, a cha-cha to Michael Jackson’s “Smooth Criminal”.

These two are so quick with their movements. Her colorful and shiny dress really added to the flashy look of the movements. They connected with the crowd with lots of eye contact, and expression in their faces. The routine was nicely coordinated with the music. If you are inclined, you can see all of these in video form provided by Miller Productions at the Pabon Productions YouTube channel.

In the video, you will get a glimpse of me on the floor following them with my camera. Having both the video and still photos can show how differently I can make the scene look with lighting and lenses. From my vantage point from down low, the dancers take on a larger presence than from above making for better “hero” angles than if I were to shoot them standing, being on their same level.

It was really fun to try to keep up with these two! The auto focus on the camera was working hard, thankfully the advancements in tracking focus has really made this a breeze from the photographer’s point of view. You can see from the video how many times my flash went off. Every single photo had them in focus. If I did not include a photo in the collection, it was due to composition, or angle to the dancers being off, not to anything technical with the camera gear. Arthur Murray – Columbia

I was looking through the photos from another Arthur Murray Showcase to post on the blog today. This one was  a show that you really need to be on your game! These dancers were from the Columbia, Maryland studio. They performed a Cha Cha show to a remix of “2 Legit 2 Quit”. Nothing really fancy in shooting this. Just keep the focus on the dancers, and quickly fire the shutter if you can see one or both of their faces.

This was not an easy task as these two have some of the quickest moves! Overall, I had to work to capture these two in camera. Their quickness, and sharp moves were really exciting for the crowd to watch,. I was able to get a few of them on the sensor. Having a combination of colors is important to dancers when coordinating their shows. At this time, these two really tied in a theme to the music – Michael Jackson’s ‘Black or White’. They captured the energy, and sharp dancing that you have in your mind’s eye when you hear a Michael Jackson track!

Overall, I am making lots of progress with the photos! This is usually a Tech Thursday post, but I really want to work on more of the edits and sorting of the Arthur Murray Spring Freestyles photos. Still on track to have them up by Saturday – if there are any delays, I’ll let you know here on the blog or on Facebook. In the meantime, here are some photos from Tess and Jumarcelon’s professional showcase dance. These two are from the Arthur Murray studio in Silver Spring, MD. It was one of the awesome shows that ended a great weekend of dancing. I’m sure a few of these photos will make it into the portfolio

The dimension from these photos really impressed me! Due to the lighting, we have the popping out of the frame. Additionally, it the flash adds a nice shimmer to the green gloves, dress, and tie. Generally, I do not think about this when setting up for photos. However, this really shows nicely! Perhaps it is the contrast between her sparkle, and his dark suit that sets it apart. What do you think?
