2019 Lunar New Year

Tysons Corner Center

Last week I photographed the 2019 Lunar New Year celebration at Tysons Corner Center. Given that they had such a large crowd in Fashion Court last year, they held the event in the same space. While there was plenty of room to see the action on two different floors of the mall, there was still a crowd of people wanting to get a view.

At this time there were some talented dancers that performed some challenging cultural dancers for the crowd. From a photography standpoint, the streaking cloths, and the dancing dragons were the most dynamic for me. However, there was also a demonstration of martial arts during the show. Certainly they also have some dynamic movements, but I am not as familiar with them. Having an idea of what movement is coming up is important for getting the best images. With this in mind, I definitely need more practicing watching them if I want to improve!

Tysons Corner Center

This post highlights some images from the 2018 2nd Half Media shoots at Tysons Corner Center. Since this covered a time with a lot of temperature changes, there were changes both outside and inside the mall. Specifically the following photos are from a large tent constructed in the parking lot outside Bloomindale’s. Compared to the interior of the mall, the very tall tent competes with the retail space size with such a large footprint! Although I am not a fan of heights, the staff at the tent let me go up their largest ladder to get some photos. It was worth the shaky knees!

Inside the mall, they had many new sets of banner advertising. As far as printing and graphic design go, this Blue Moon ad was particularly impactful. Perhaps it is the combination of the yellow and blue colors, but this really rendered well in the camera. I really enjoy slowing down, setting the tripod, and creating these purposefully lined-up images.

Tysons Corner Center

In the last month of 2018, I photographed the BrandBox Grand Opening at Tysons Corner Center. Since it is the start of a new year, I thought the first post should be about this new space opened at the mall. BrandBox is a new retail concept offered at some Macerich properties specifically designed for ease of start up. Being that these spaces are more flexible than traditional spaces, they create a nice template for a retailer to use.

On this occasion, the first set of BrandBox stores were opened. Urbanstems, DKNY, Nectar, Interior Define, Naadam, and Winky Lux are the first teanants at the opening. Overall, these are very clean, open stores to walk through. As a result of this design, visibility is very high for shoppers passing through. As can be seen, this visibility creates an impactful first impression for brands that may not be immediately familiar. Undoubtedly this could be a great stepping step for retailers into the Tysons market. From the photos, I enjoyed the contrast that each space use to stand out. Although they had similar dimensions, and basic structures, their unique store designs really made them stand out.
