Mid-Atlantic Championships

Here are some photos from the recent 2013 USA Dance Mid-Atlantic Championships. This competition has great amateur dancing in Ballroom and Latin categories over 2 days. There are plenty of opportunities to capture dynamic images of dancers. The first image was during the Standard competition, and I guess was during a Quickstep. This illustrates some of the goals for getting good action photography. Just as with concert photography, a good expression in the middle of the performance can make for a great image. Also, there is good action from the lady’s dress – flaring out from her at the bottom.

In this photo, there are some nice elements working together in the frame. There is a hint of the flash peeking out from behind the man, and there are other dancers on the floor in the background. They are present, but not too distracting to the main subject in the frame. The light is definitely luck, but the additional background dancers is something you can aim for with landscape formatted photos. Most of the portrait oriented photos in ballroom dance only accommodate one couple at a time. This is the majority of the photos that I take at events, but they don’t show up as well on the web! The composition for these photos is more difficult for ballroom dance, but they can add context and variety to the coverage.

Salsa Bachata – Saturday

©TimeLine Media - Salsa Bachata Throwdown in monochrome

It has been a busy week of editing, and orders in the studio. Thanks to everyone that has visited the proofing site and the blog! It’s nice to hear from you, and how you are enjoying the new photos. I am going out for another shoot today to cover Marsha Bonet’s Showcase this evening, and I’m sure we will make more great photos there.

Dance Photography

I have to get the gear cleaned and ready, so here are some of my favorite photos from last weekend’s Salsa Bachata Throwdown converted to monochrome which really gives them a different feel from the color versions. Many of the dancers were wearing very vibrant and colorful clothes for the social dance. Taking the color out of the photos, focuses more attention on faces and expressions. This helps to define your subjects, and really brings the viewer into your images.

The monochrome conversion was done in Adobe Lightroom version 4. With the color information, I used the histogram of the images to ensure that there were both true black and true white areas in the images. This boosts the overall contrast of the images making them look much better than the default conversion to gray scale settings. Try this with some of your images – make sure that there are area of complete black and complete white to make sepia or black/white images really pop off the screen.

Salsa Bachata Throwdown

©TimeLine Media - 2013 Salsa Bachata Throwdown, Rockville, MD

Last Saturday, I covered an exciting new event in the DC Area – the Salsa Bachata Throwdown! During the day on Saturday, there were workshops with many dancers from area coming to learn from some great groups including Calle Luna from Pennsylvania, and Rhythmic Fusion from California. In the evening, there was plenty of time for some social dancing to the music from DJ Jose Moldanado. In between the open dancing, were some performances by the visiting and host groups. I am still editing the photos, but here are some of my favorites so far.

I want to especially thank Kat Arias for inviting me to cover her event! She is one of the most passionate influencers in the DC dance scene. This was a continuation of her mission to get people dancing!
