We are well into the 2015 season of ballroom dance events! Last week we released the photos from the 2015 Maryland Dancesport Championships. I was overall very pleased with those images. As can be seen, it was great to make a new set of awesome images from the dance floor. With the new images coming online, it is time for some of last year’s collections to expire. This was second year that the event was held in the Atrium Ballroom of the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center. If you have never seen this amazing structure, you need to pay it a visit! Located in the heart of Federal Buildings in downtown Washington, DC, it is a perfect setting for an event with “DC” in the name. Right on Pennsylvania Avenue, the dancers were set in a large ballroom that projected the strength and grandness associated with city.

For this one-day competition we saw a lot of familiar faces. Being local to the DC area, it was great to see friends out on the dance floor to show off their new dance loops, costumes, and what they have been working on over the past year. Jennifer and Fabio Bonini, the organizers of the competition, ran it very smoothly. We ran on time and had great accommodations throughout the day. There were no stops in the action, and the decorations for the evening, really set it apart for the Showcase competition and Professional exhibition.

I personally grabbed a lot of images that I am keeping in my portfolio. It is a different looking ballroom from most that we cover. It does mean that there are some changes that have to be made to the lighting setup, but it is a nice challenge to work through. I like having photos that are still my style in terms of how the dancers look towards the camera, but having a little different light falling on them just to give the eye something different to see. Last Sunday was a great day of dancing in the heart of downtown Washington, DC! Jennifer and Fabio Bonini’s DC Dance Challenge is always a friendly and fun event in early October. We have enjoyed reconnecting with so many local dance studios and dancers as they put on their dresses and dance shoes for the judges. We arrived early and had no problems getting setup in the Atrium Ballroom at the Ronald Reagan Building. Now that is was our second year at this venue, we really had a much easier time finding where to get better photos of the dancers on the floor. After going through all the photos form the day, I am happy with how they came out. I hope you check them out and let me know how you find them!

DC Dance Challenge

The organizers, staff, and volunteers that helped out the event really did a great job. The DJ had a great music setup, and the MC did very well with his second time hosting this event. It is a tough job to go through all those awards! The judges also have a unique interaction with the dancers and audience at this event with the Dancing with the DC Stars event in the evening. It gives them a chance to give comments to choreographed pieces directly to the dancers with the audience watching and listening. They gave some great comments that will help the dancers further develop their dancing, and the audience learned along with them. This must be the season for ballroom dancing. We just finished one big event, but we have a couple more right around the corner! On October 5, we are going to be in downtown Washington, DC for the DC Dance Challenge. We always enjoy covering this event because of the great dancing, and of course the familiar faces! It is great to connect with so many local dance enthusiasts and professionals.

The venues that the organizers choose for this event has always been great for photos! In previous years, the Spanish Ballroom at Glen Echo served as the backdrop, but they have switched to the beautiful Atrium Ballroom at the Ronald Reagan Building. If you have driven around the large Federal buildings in DC, you no doubt have seen this imposing structure in the Federal Triangle area. Right off the main atrium of the building is the large ballroom that is perfect for holding dancesport events. We had a great time shooting in the space that held a great showcase for the dancers and their talents.

Looking at the website for this year’s competition, it looks like it will be another great event! In the evening, they have some great professional shows where there are lots of exciting photos to be made. My favorite from the day is the Dancing with the DC Stars Showcase competition where the dancers get to hear directly from the judges right after their performance, and with the audience watching. There is a lot of nervous tension in the air, but it really pushed the dancers to do their best, and the audience gets a great show! If you are in the area in a few weekends, try and make it – the organizers and attendees are some of the friendliest around, and you will enjoy a great showcase.
