This photo is one of my favorites from covering the SingStrong DC event. Street Corner Symphony performed there in 2011, and the organizers gave me great access to shoot all around the venue. This was a shot from just back stage during their performance. It gives a different angle from most of the audience. The streaming stage lights give add a nice element to the photo. At this time it breaks up the big black hole for the top 3rd of the frame. Additionally, there is a little view of the audience in the bottom part of the frame. I processed the photo to be a contrasty black and white reminiscent of classic rock musician photos from the 70’s and 80’s.

The coolest thing was that I had the opportunity to see Street Corner Symphony perform again this month at Jammin’ Java in Vienna, VA. Not only were they still as good as they were on the NBC Show, the Sing-Off, but they are still accessible and responsive to their fans. If you ever have the opportunity to see them, definitely take it! There will be more great singing this weekend at SingStrong, and I hope to make more great photos there again.

Street Corner Symphony

This will be just a quick blog post for this Friday. I am preparing all my gear for this weekend’s first ballroom dance event. I am more getting excited already, and can’t wait to get set up! But before the event, we will be heading to Jammin’ Java in Vienna, VA to watch Street Corner Symphony perform. They are an a cappella group that we first saw on the NBC show, the Sing-Off. They competed very well and came in second place. Soon after, they were the headline act at the SingStrong event in Reston, VA. I photographed their performance which showed off the talents that they displayed on TV. It was a terrific show, andI can’t wait to hear them again.

This weekend we will be shooting the USA Dance Mid-Atlantic Championships in Bethesda, MD. I don’t know if I will continue to blog updates during the event, but I hope to post at least something here, so stay tuned! After the event, I will go edit the photos, and post them to the photo proofing site at- http://proofs.timelinedc.com

You can go there now, put in your email at the event heading. I will send a notice to everyone as soon as the photos are available to view and purchase. I will only send out emails when there are specials, and when events are expiring. I’ll place other notices here on the blog. Have a great weekend!

A Cappella – The Sing Off – SingStrong

Reston, Virginia

This is the third season for the NBC Show ‘The Sing Off’ which airs on Monday nights. Being that I am a former member of Juxtaposition, a college a cappella group from Virginia Tech, I was automatically hooked on this show. (I spent a lot of my extra college money on CDs which has transitioned to a downloading habit!) When this show debuted, I was excited to have another vehicle to see new a cappella groups.

There were groups that I was very familiar with and some that I had never been exposed to performing. There was an audience for the show from the first season. Consequently, there were an uptick in the amount of internet traffic regarding this form of music. At this time, I was lucky to find out that an a cappella music festival was held locally called SingStrong. The organizers graciously gave me access to photograph the groups, workshops, and the concerts. All of the proceeds which were donated in support of Alzheimer’s research.

Performers

The featured performers were prominently featured in the The Sing Off including Nota in 2010 and Street Corner Symphony in 2011. This was an amazing opportunity for me to see what was new and upcoming in a cappella up close with the latest in techniques, technologies and musicians that are pushing creative limits and making amazing music. This season is the largest yet – more groups, more rounds of competition, and another episode is on tonight. Check it out, and if you are in the DC area, or love to watch live music, check out SingStrong for next year’s schedule.
