Tysons Corner Arthur Murray – Spring Freestyles Pro Show

Saved the best for last? This was the first of the professional showcases at the DC Area Arthur Murray Spring Freestyles last month. Cliff and Allison kicked off the pro shows with this awesome samba. We were particularly proud since Cliff has been one of our instructors since recently coming back to the Tysons Corner studio. The poor guy is tasked with trying to get us to dance better every week.

Allison’s shows have always been crowd favorites  and this one was no different. It was definitely a highlight for our studio, and we look forward to more! We just had a lesson last night. Just some basic movements which always seem harder than the drawn-out school figures. Working out the brain more than the feet this time!

All the photos from this show can be seen at the proofing site. Not only are they fun to look at, but they can be a guide for body position in these dances. Although you may not dance as quickly or snappy as Allison and Cliff, they give you guides on what to shoot for. Here are some of my favorites – enjoy!

Ballroom dance – portrait photos

If you have never been to a ballroom dance event, you have missed a feast for the eyes and ears. If you enjoy music, the high volume of instrumentals and vocals will call you to the ballroom if you are anywhere within earshot. When you venture towards the sounds, the music will get louder, there will be screams of encouragement from the audience. Then the visuals will hit you. There are colorful ballroom gowns, dancers moving confidently across the floor. Moreover the flash bulbs firing off from the audience – it is a lot to take in!

Portraits

I remember  my first time entering such an event. It was overwhelming, and being a first-time participant, I was definitely anxious about getting out on the floor. This is what makes photographing ballroom dance so compelling. There are a million things going through the minds of dancers; there is a coordinated dance behind the scenes to keep the event moving from the organizers, and it all plays out in front of a live audience consisting of your dancing friends and other supporters in the crowd.

After being in a ballroom for a few minutes, you can easily see how photographers can end up with thousands of photos after a weekend. The action photos of dancers take the bulk of the collection, but there are times during small breaks in the action, that you can capture some really nice portraits. All the cameras are set up, so why not take a break from the normal photos, and grab other interesting shots. After the main dancing was over, I will setup a light or two outside to get some posed photos of dancers and other guests, so come and visit me if you’d like one! Here are some of my favorites from the recent Arthur Murray Spring Freestyles. Enjoy!

Of course I have lots of orders to place, so here is just a quick post on featuring professional Arthur Murray dancers from the Gaithersburg studio. Thanks to everyone that has visited the website and supported our photography through orders. We are so happy that you are enjoying the photos!

In looking through these show photos, I am starting to feel confident in my lighting setup. Overall, the Hilton McLean in Tysons has a large, long ballroom. Especially for Arthur Murray events where they have the entire room. While photographing these shows, I had 4 large flashes setup to light up the floor. The size of the ballroom allows for some of the lights to face right into the camera without adding flare to the photos. The size of the space can been seen in how out of focus the crowd is in these photos! The dancers can still pop out with them staying in focus, and the best light hitting them. Of course, I wish I could get every dancer on the floor in this light. But this only works with only one couple out on the floor. It is another benefit of the ending show from the event!
