Spring Showcase – Photos Uploading

Tysons, Virginia

This post is up late as I am getting very close to uploading the photos from last Sunday’s Arthur Murray Spring Showcase! I had a light schedule this week, and it has allowed me to really put my nose into the editing and sorting of the photos. I have tried to sort everyone by their studio so that it is easier to find your images. If there are any mistakes in where I have filed you or others, please let me know by email at Rassi at timelinedc.com. I want everyone to be able to see their photos from their routines.

Maybe by later this evening the photos may already be able to view! If you want to be emailed as soon as they are ready, you can sign up for the email list at the bottom of the page. I try to only send out 2 emails a month with updates on photos at the TimeLine Media site. I do not want to spam your mailboxes with too many reminders.

If you were at the Showcase on Sunday, you know that there were some awesome professional shows that ended the event. With so many, I will be getting creative with the images before the Fall Freestyles later this year. There are so many to choose from with all the variety of dances and performers, so I hope you check out the Facebook page for details on voting for your favorites. Thanks to the DC Area Arthur Murray staff and students for having us cover another of your events. We appreciate you coming by to preview the images at our booth. Also telling us all your stories about the studio, the dancing, and what you have planned for next time. It was a great event, and we hope to see you dancing again at Freestyles!

Arthur Murray – Tysons Corner – Foxtrot

Foxtrot professional show - ©TimeLine Media

Chantilly, Virginia

When a Foxtrot comes on over the speakers, I think of relaxed, smooth almost walking steps across the floor. This professional show, like many of the others that we shoot, was much more of a showy display than what we do during practice – as the shows should be! Luck would be with me for making images from this performance.

We have covered the DC Area Arthur Murray events for a few years now, so many do not even know that we are regular students at the Tysons Corner studio. In addition, these two are our regular instructors, so we do have an affinity for them, and would have been cheering along with the crowd if we were not working! That disclaimer aside, I think my favorite images from this event came from this show.

Of course the dancers are well-practiced, and they pulled the performance off nicely after some trouble with getting the correct music track to play. I also placed myself in what I thought would be the best spot to get the dancers by sitting across the long side of the floor with the studio banners in the back of the frame, and the flashes positioned in the back were in a spot to not flare too much from my position.

But really luck is what really allowed me to get this awesome photo of the two of them in mid-air!

Even when you are shooting quick action, you know when you may have captured something cool. You may not have time to look at the back of the camera, but you know by the timing, there is a good chance you have it. This frame was a complete surprise! You can still make out that they are dancing, but there is an abstract element that really makes it stand out to me. I may have to print this one out large to hang at home. This is definitely an early contender for my favorite 2014 ballroom dance photo!

Ballroom in Black and White

Having the option of getting your prints in black and white has been an important part of my photography business. In this age of having an extraordinary amount of images being produced by cell phone post processing becomes an important part of the professional photographer’s toolkit. I used to like Photoshop Actions and Lightroom Presets to make cross processed colors. Additionally these can make other strange contortions to make my images stand out. However, I have moved away from that look. Now, it is only color or monochrome images that I show. At this time the black and whites are quickly becoming my favorite for a lot of dance images.

Taking the color out of images really makes the subjects stand out. This makes it a challenge for the photographer to make sure there is a good subject in a good position! If you have a bad photo composition in color, changing it to black and white will NOT help. It all starts with composition – a good subjects placed correctly in the frame will look good in either, but it can be enhanced by removing the distraction of color information so that the viewers are forced to consider the subject alone.

Monochrome images rely on the light tones to show off subject, and the dark tones to reduce other non-essential elements in the frame. In creating these images, I use an adjustment brush darken areas that are no important, and lighten faces, hands, and part that I want to catch the viewer’s eye. The lightest parts of a scene will draw your eye first through the frame, so emphasize those parts by lightening them above the background.

Adding a sepia tone is also an option that I offer for prints on the website. This takes the tones in the shadows and darker areas, and gives them a slight brown town that simulates and aging print. This is also a popular option and is easily created after all the color is removed from the original photo. The effect is the same on the viewer but adds a little more nostalgic feel to the image.
