Snow and Ice!

©TimeLine Media - December ice storm

The news this passed week was full of stories about snow and ice blanketing most of the US as winter weather moved across the entire continent. In just watching the football games on TV yesterday, there were so many teams playing in wet and snowy conditions. Here in the DC area, we finally received our part of the storm, but we did brave the conditions to cover our previously scheduled events. This morning, though, we are having intermittent power issues, so I did not want to risk losing photos and work, and have shut down the computers for now. I went out and took some photos of the icy trees and other structures in the area as I looked for a warm place to work.

There are some beautiful scenes out there with the ice still coating all the trees! The branches have highlights making them stick out from the shadows as the sun hits them. Unfortunately, this is why the power companies are working hard today – there are many branches coming down with the added weight. All the images were from what is becoming my favorite camera these days, the Fuji X100s – it just works! I’ll have my frustrations on a future blog post. Enjoy these images in the meantime!

Christmas Decorations

©TimeLine Media - Christmas Tree decorations

If it seems like Christmas is approaching quickly this year, it is!! I have been lucky to be photographing a lot this holiday season, and am really enjoying working so many holiday events. The decorations around the buildings and store have been inspiring for making photos, so I have made the most of the opportunity.

Tree Lights

My mother always decorates a beautiful Christmas tree. She keeps the light all white with many different decorations she has collected over the years. She used to decorate multiple trees, so she has to pick and choose which ones to hang every time it goes up! Some of the ornaments are hand made, some were bought when she first started decorating trees in the 1970’s, and many of them are gifts from family, friends, and former patients. We stopped by for a visit, and she did a nice job again. Enjoy some of the photos!

Last Event

We are shooting one more ballroom dance event for the year, the studio showcase for That’s Dancing in Jessup, MD. It is planned for this evening, and if the weather holds up, it should be a great show! I will work on the photos this week, and when they are completed, you can see them at the usual site for all of our ballroom dance photos:

Panoramic Images – FujiFilm X100s

Extended Photos

In going through more of the features of the FujiFilm X100s, I have found another feature that adds value and usefulness from a digital SLR camera. In the menu system where you select the drive of the shutter, you can choose the panoramic function. This works exactly the same as the panoramic feature of the iOS camera app from the Apple iPhone. When this is selected, the back of the camera will give you an arrow to show you the direction to pan the camera to make the image. After clicking the shutter, you can hear the camera making multiple images. Afterwards you move the camera from left to right.

Panoramic Images

The X100s has some advantages over the smartphone app. If you leave the camera in completely manual mode, you can set the aperture and shutter speed. In this case each component image is consistent with the one right next to it. The camera does process the panorama very quickly, so you can quickly preview to see any problems that may require you to retry. I wish that it would be possible work with RAW files with this mode, but that is not an option. Only 1 JPG is made from each panorama. The X100s also has a really good grid overlay on the screen as you make the panorama which helps to keep the horizon straight! This is implemented much better on the x100s than the phone – my horizons were much straighter throughout with less cropping needed from the top or bottom.

This is a welcome feature that I will definitely be using more. Couple the ease and speed with which you can create panoramic images with the image quality from the sensor, and you have another tool to make unique images. Let me know if you do this by stitching with software, or using a smartphone. I am sure there are lots of techniques and tips that would make this even better!
