Pier Portraits

Piers are often used subjects in photography. There are many aspects of their setting that automatically make photos better. Obviously, piers extend over bodies of water or hills that descend quickly underneath their foundation. This solves one problem in most photos – a busy background. Eliminating distractions in your frame is difficult in most settings. There are always things on the ground. Or they are in the back of the frame, and in front of your subjects. This can be distracting.

Pier portraits are easy to setup. On a pier, usually background elements are very far in the distance compared to your subjects. The sides have almost nothing in the frame as the ground is also very far below your subjects. Even without using an open aperture, these parts of the photos will fall into a pleasing blurred background due to compression. They are too far from the lens to be rendered sharply much like using a wide open aperture.

Another aspect of pier portraits is that the pylons on the sides automatically give you leading lines. Having these directional cues in your photos help draw viewer’s eyes to your subjects. Subjects will automatically be in the right position since they always walk between the pylons! Yes, this technique can be cliche for some, but it is very easy to execute. Similar techniques can be done on railroad tracks, but the distracting background elements can be harder to deal with depending on your particular setting. Let me know how it works for you!

DC Dance Challenge

©TimeLine Media - 2012 DC Dance Challenge

Our next ballroom dance event will be this upcoming Sunday – the 2013 DC Dance Challenge. We have covered this event for a number of years, and we enjoy the day of dancing at the beautiful Spanish Ballroom in Glen Echo park. Not to put too much of a damper on the excitement, but due to the Federal government shutdown, the regular venue may be unavailable. The organizers will still hold the event on Sunday, but there may be a change of place since the park will be closed, and there will be no access to the ballroom.

Knowing the bigger picture, this is small in comparison to the effect of the shutdown on the thousands of federal workers. Especially in the local area that we live and work, we know that this will be a tough week. In any case, the event will go on Sunday, but stay tuned to the DC Dance Challenge website for updates on the venue. We are hopeful that the shutdown will end for those who depend on the government for their livelihood. In addition, we would love to go back to the Spanish Ballroom for the uniqueness and beauty of the room. Here are some images from last year’s event showing off the space-

Swing Professional Show

We love to feature the professional showcases that close out these events on the blog. The floor is cleared of all dancers, and the attention of all the students, staff, judges, and guests are on the instructors that have worked to put together a routine to show off their best! In full disclosure, we are biased. We first started learning to ballroom dance at the Arthur Murray in Tysons Corner, and we have learned so much from the instructors that have worked there. This show by Carlos and Allison was amazing, and we wanted to get up and dance right after them! The Swing was “The Heart of Rock and Roll” by Huey Lewis and the News. A great song, and a great routine.

If you would like to view the show in video form, please visit the new Arthur Murray Tysons YouTube page! I love the comparison of the same event in still and motion. Comparatively, I learn so much about my shooting and setup in looking at the differences. I will blog more about this in future posts, but selfishly, I’m just happy to be able to watch the entire thing without looking through the viewfinder the whole time! It is a different experience live, in still photos, and on video, and I enjoyed comparing each. If you want to see all the photos from the event, that have been posted to the proofing site- http://proofs.timelinedc.com
