Assisting Saturday

I am hoping it will be a beautiful Saturday! My assignment today is to be a second shooter and assistant on a wedding today. This is one of the best jobs as a photographer. You have to use all your photographic skills in technique and composition while trying to manage different environments, and lighting situations but from a slightly different perspective. When assisting, my first thought is not what looks best from behind my camera, but from the camera of the primary photographer. Do not be in his shot first and foremost! Then think what different lens you could use to capture the same scene so that they have a variety of photos to choose from when editing the whole day.

Second Shooting

With the gear you are carrying, make sure you keep your eye on it – the primary photographer may unexpectedly be running to keep up with the bridge and groom! You do not want them to worry about where their things are and missing shots because of that. Finally, during posed portraits, I do not have a camera in my hands. The less cameras pointed at a group during that time, the more likely that everyone will be looking at the primary photographer’s lens. This part will take much longer than anyone, including the photographer, wants it to take.

During this time, I will see if an extra light or reflector will help, or I will try to figure out family members that need to be in photos are ready when it is their turn. It is still a busy day even if you are not the main photo person in charge! Hope you have a great weekend!

WeddingWire Rated – 2013

It was nice to see in my email that I have been noted as a WeddingWire rated business. I have not actively asked my previous wedding couples for reviews on my photography services, so it was really nice to see that some of them did this for me! As far as weddings go, I second shoot or assist primary photographers on weddings more than do these on my own, but I do enjoy covering these events.

Weddings are a lot of work for the photographer! It is a full 10+ hour day of shooting, and lots of editing time afterwards. Comparatively to ballroom dance events, the editing time can be lengthy because of many different lighting situations throughout the day. You can go from inside to outside, church to hotel, restaurant to hotel ballroom. They are really amazing days, but they will take a lot out of you. In fact, I have never come back from a wedding thinking, that wasn’t that much work! Thank you to everyone that sent in a nice review that earned me this badge from an organization that covers all types of event vendors. If you feel so inclined, please leave me a review here!

June Saturdays

©TimeLine Media - wedding photography

It’s just that time of year. For wedding photographers especially, their Saturdays are full in the middle of their busy season! There is nothing like have a wedding in June. I have photographed and assisted in photographing several weddings in the DC Area. At this time, the city landmarks will be dotted with brides and grooms. While they are out a photographer is directing them to pose, and look. The photographer is attempting to make some nice photos while trying to minimize the tourists in the background. Given that this is such a photogenic city they have made a great choice of location!

Wedding Photography

It is nice to be part of their big day, and a responsibility that I took for granted before being the person behind the camera. These are the photos that are looked at by multiple generations. In that case, these photos are the first family heirloom. Additionally, these are the items that are sought after when natural disasters take other material possessions. They will survive long after the flowers and cake. These thoughts keep me sharp throughout the day, and humble me every time someone asks me to photograph their wedding.
