Some of my favorite photos from the 2012 DC Area Arthur Murray Summer Showcase. This year’s event will be held on June 22, 2013 at the Hilton McLean in Tysons Corner, VA.
Looking back over photos from last year, these had change to the background. Of course, we started going to a new venue at the McLean Hilton. Consequently, we have a change to the background of the dance photos. Comparatively to the Sheraton, this ballroom had a lower ceiling making a change to our lighting setup. For that reason, we had a change in how our photos look. Overall, how would you describe the photos? Do you see the difference? With this in mind, let me know your thoughts. We have a new year to make more photos. Given that, I do not want to have the quality of images drop. We take a lot of effort to bring gear, extra help, and processing time after the event to finish the photos. We hope you enjoy them as much as we put into them!

Now that we are in a new year, we are preparing to make more ballroom dance photos. On this occasion, we are looking back on photos from the 2012 USA Dance Mid-Atlantic Championships. This year’s event will be February 16 – 17, 2013. Since this will be the same venue as last year, I am confident on our lighting setup. The Marriott North Bethesda has some of the largest ballrooms in the area. From a photography standpoint, this makes the job much easier.
Similarly to the organizers, we are trying to incorporate new technologies as they are available. The electronic organizers used by judges help streamline the scoring. Overall, I can see the scrutineer getting the data much faster. Especially considering the large number of heats and scores that need tabulating, I am sure this makes the job easier. This time, we are going to try to do some things behind the scenes for the photography too. We want to get these out to you as soon as possible. As a photographer, one of the most important events that you can cover is a wedding. This day has been planned for months, years, sometimes longer! Photography is one of the considerations that brides and grooms have to decide about early on. There are so many photography choices around, and in the the DC Area, so many GOOD ones.

How do you choose which photographer to cover your wedding?
The first thing I would do is to go visit many photographer websites in the area which you are planning of having your ceremony and/or reception. The internet allows you to see their work – do you like their style? There are photojournalist style photographers that capture incredible candid moments throughout your day. There are also photographers that can pose, and position your family and friends perfectly for staged portraits. See what the differences are, and which you envision your photos to look in an album. Do you like how they edit and process photos? The images they show can look vintage with Intstagram-like effects, some have bright saturated colors, and some are excellent with producing black and white photos. When you decide on a few, and contact them, it is most important to see if you like their personality. You will have to spend one of your most stressful days with this person, and see them for more time than your new spouse. It is imperative that you trust what they are saying, and that they have the experience and confidence to get you photos that you need on time so that you do not miss any important events that you have planned.
