These photos are from another great event that TimeLine Media photographs each year, the River City Ballroom Dance Competition. Competition organizers Veronica Braun and Lee Nugent from Simply Ballroom VA in Richmond have worked hard to put together a really nice event for dancers to show off for judges and studio friends. It is held at the Greater Richmond Convention Center which has a large high-ceiling room with a beautiful dance floor.

Familiar faces

It is also nice to see so many familiar dancers at this event. Being from the northern Virginia area, it is nice to see many instructors, dancers that recognize us, and know what we do. It emphatically does make for better photos! The trip to Richmond is very drivable. Additionally, the area around the convention center is very convenient to hotels, restaurants. Also it gives a nice variety to the type of venues we shoot. I am much more confident if anyone asks for photos in a large convention center room that I can light the room to get good exposures.

2013 Event

The convention center room is so large that I do have to adjust the way I light the dance floor, but we still get beautiful images of dancers in all styles. This year, they are planning a Professional Showcase Challenge to add to the program which should be a great show! We are excited about going back to cover the event this year, and we look forward to making more great images. See you there!

Ballroom Dance photos – 2012 Baltimore Dancesport Challenge

I’ll have more on this event, but here are some favorites from the 2012 Baltimore Dancesport Challenge. This is a terrific one-day event to show off your dancing in front of the judges. As far as ballroom dance photos go, this was a beautiful ballroom setting. From the pleasing light fixtures, and warm wood accents, the background blurred nicely in most of the images.

On this occasion, this competition moved to the BWI Westin. It was an overall upgrade in terms of improving the venue for this competition. Marielle has in fact a lot of experience in running a professional event, and this better showed off how accommodating she and her team can be.

After all the dancing, they always have some great professional shows to cap off the day. We are especially looking forward to traveling to the Baltimore area for this year’s edition. This year’s event will be March 16, 2013. Visit their website here. for ticket and showcase information for anyone interested in attending the competition.

Washington Redskins photography

My wife has had season tickets for a number of years now. While I have always wanted to know what it would be like to photograph a professional football game from the sidelines, she has always wanted to know what it would be like to host an NLF playoff game at the Redskins’ home stadium. A few seasons ago, I got my chance. Today, we get to experience hers! The Seattle Seahawks will come to play the Washington Redskins in a Wildcard game. We’ll be in our usual seats for a most unusual occasion. As a native of northern Virginia, the Redskins have been the only football team I have rooted for both from my dad, and of course, the media coverage through playoff and Superbowl runs in the 80’s and 90’s.

Season tickets

After going to many games, it becomes easier to observe some of the other details during the game other than the on-the-field action. I noticed the photographers, how they moved to cover the game, and tried to match what they were doing to the images published in the paper and magazines afterwards. I looked into how I could get access to the sidelines, and with enough exposure to my portfolio of photos, I was able to get a credential!

Beyond the First Row

After a season on the sidelines, I have the utmost respect for photographers that are there every week trying to capture photos in one of the most challenging situations. The action in professional football is so fast, and the the field is so large. Additionally, the lenses are only built so long, that to get these images take luck, practice, and skill. For action sports, the photos can never be too close to the action.

Tilted lines in photos were a no-no if you wanted any hope of getting published. Video cameras had much higher priority on the access scale for games, so don’t cross that painted line! And whatever you do, don’t get caught up watching the game – keep your eye in your viewfinder! The action can go from being 60 yards away, to so-close-you’re-passed-the-minimum-focusing-distance length in one 5 second play! I was grateful for the opportunity, and I hope to get the chance again.
