Last week, we went to the BWI area of Maryland to cover the 2017 Baltimore Dancesport Challenge. After the week of editing and sorting, I have posted the collection of photos at the TimeLine Media proofing site. To clarify, the photos have been sorted by the gentleman’s number worn in heats. Please share the links with anyone that may like to see them:

Thanks to Marielle Pabon for having us cover her event again this year. She has been a big supporter of our work for years. Likewise, we attempt to get good marketing photos for her competition during the event. The way she sets up the ballroom makes that an easy job. For one thing, there is a beautiful dark blue curtain behind the dais. Having it just in that section, keeps the rest of the room open making it less confining than other setups we have attended. As can be seen in the above photo, the attendance was high for this event! The award break emphasized that. We hope you enjoy the images, and thank you for sharing them around!

2017 Prom Fashion Show – Tysons Corner Center

Tysons Corner Center

Earlier this month, I photographed the 2017 Prom Fashion show at Tysons Corner Center. To demonstrate the clothing styles for this Spring, the Lord and Taylor location in Tysons supplied the clothing and produced the show. As can be seen, the show was setup outside their location similar to last year’s Spring shows.

Before the start, I set up one flash about 3/4 of the way down the runway. Seeing that this was again a long carpet for a runway, I needed the flash to go distance. Moreover being underneath an overhang from the floor above, there is not much ambient light in that part of the mall. During the show, I stayed at the end of the runway carpet firing down towards the store branding on the other end. Varying the focal length as they walked towards me allowed for some emphasis on different aspects of the outfits.

Producing Creativity in the Moment – TEDxTysons

Valo Park – Tysons, VA

The TEDxTysons group held a salon event at Valo Park in Tysons. Producing Creativity in the Moment was the title of the salon. In contrast to their main event from last year, this had a smaller audience by design. Also, there were fewer presentations. However, the talks were still impactful and very-well polished. The team really crafted another kind of event to build on their main event from last year.

Given that the organizers do not want the content of talks to be known before the event, no one comes in with pre-formed ideas. In fact, it is one of the attractions of attending in person. On this occasion, I was excited about what was going to happen. As a photographer, I come to every shoot not knowing exactly what kind of images I am going to make. Although I have a basic technical knowledge to work my cameras, it is impossible to pre-visualize everything that I need to produce. ‘Producing Creativity in the Moment’ sounded right up my alley.

If you were in the room, the interactivity in the last presentation really brought this idea home. The presentation by Chris Ulrich ended with an exercise. The noise and energy created in that moment was so spontaneous and sweeping that you could not have expected that outcome when you arrived! I hope the photos do it justice. TEDxTysons shared the entire set on their page.
