Washington DC – Capitol Dome

Today marks the 150th anniversary of the completion of the Capitol Dome in Washington, DC. I had no idea this milestone was this close, but I have been taking many photos of the building lately. There are plans to completely cover the dome with scaffolding for the next 2 years because of the deteriorating conditions of the structure.

A story published on CBS News’ 60 Minutes program last night had a lot more photography from inside the dome and flyovers above the building. I know that the time will pass quickly, but I want to get as many photos as I can before the dome is covered. These photos were from a recent walk on Capitol Hill in the early evening with the Fuji X100s. The camera continues to perform very well for me!

Being that scaffolding is planned for the dome, wedding photographers have posted their concerns about photos around the city for the next couple of years. Indeed, it will be another way to mark this time in DC history. Additionally it will be completed by the time we inaugurate the next president. Progress and democracy will keep rolling on in our city.

9 Years!

Wedding photos

9 years ago, my wife and I were married! A time before social media, touchscreen phones, and surprisingly, almost a decade ago. This being a photography blog, this is a perfect forum to go through the old photo archive and look back. 2004 was near the start of the digital photography explosion. Our professional photographers used both film and digital cameras to cover our wedding.

Anniversary

When we purchased the negatives, we actually got a folder of film negatives! Our favorite photos were shot from the film camera. It was, of course, the more mature medium, and they knew how to get the most out of the film compared to the digital captures. I remember Yakov used a Nikon F100, and Don used a Canon 10D with battery packs on their flashes hung on large brackets. It was my first up-close look at how a professional wedding photographer works. I suppose my life changed in more ways than one that day!

We did have our own digital camera, a Nikon (of course) Coolpix 5700. It was my first digital camera, and I used it every chance that I could. I tried to work image composition, experimented with lighting, focus, and re-learned all the lessons of photography that were difficult to learn without the instant feedback possible with digital captures.

Wedding Photography

Today, I am helping to make new wedding images for couples, and October continues to be a popular time in the DC Area for weddings. I did now know until my fiance picked this date, that it is the BEST time to get married! The really hot and humid weather is gone, but the real cold has not moved in. It is appropriate to have saturated fall colors in the clothes and flowers in the day. Looking back, it is so nice to see how we can enjoy some time outside for our photos as well as to have earlier sunsets for nice portrait light. Aside from the technical side, these are priceless memories of our family gathering and celebration. I will have to remember this the next time I go out to photograph another wedding.

Holy Trinity 10th Anniversary Gala

In late June, I had the opportunity to photograph a beautiful gala celebration for the 10th Anniversary of the start of Holy Trinity Parish in Gainesville, VA. There was a great crowd there to celebrate the challenging work done over the last decade. Afterwards it led to the creation of a large and active church community with an amazing building for Sunday Masses. Some of those attending were Anne and Ronald Dixon from Dixon Studio. They are the incredible artists whose award-winning work is on display at the parish. They created many of the windows, objects, and other details built into the church building, some of which I photographed for them here.

The evening’s main event was a musical performance by Julie Murphy Wells, the lead vocalist of Eddie From Ohio. She sang her favorite selections of standards and Broadway songs with her band in Merchant Hall of the Hylton Performing Arts Center in Manassas, VA. This space is the premiere place for holding musical, theatrical presentations for audiences in the area. I have enjoyed many performances of symphonies and other musical groups at area auditoriums, but Hylton is now a place to proudly display talented performers. I would like to come back to photograph or enjoy another performance before too long!

Thanks to Father Peffley, and the Holy Trinity 10th Anniversary Committee for having me cover this event. It was a privilege to cover such an important milestone at a beautiful setting. Thank you!
