For this post, I wanted to revisit some 2016 Headshots that were all done with a mobile lighting setup. If coming to the studio is not convenient for you or your staff, it is equally possible for me to bring the lighting on location. As an illustration, both of these sessions were done with a mobile lighting setup.

Burke, Virginia

Joe Mjelde is the owner of the Edward Jones Investments office in Burke, VA. When he needed some images to accompany an article on his services, he hired me to get photos in his newly renovated office. Since it was very clean in his office, I incorporated the environment in the images.

Similarly to Joe’s session, I photographed Lakshmi and Ted in a conference room. On this occasion, I was a keynote speaker at a networking group. For my talk, I wanted to do a live demonstration for the purpose of showing my mobile capabilities. Both work nicely to me! Having a clean white background really makes images pop out of white backgrounds as seen here:

Coming across clients on social media jogged my memory for these 2016 studio headshots. For these examples, I photographed in the studio. Compared to on-location setups, there are some advantages to doing it this way. Firstly, I have time to set the lighting beforehand. This will save time in how long you need to be at the studio. Secondly, a studio shoot allows for tethering the camera to the computer. Specifically, the images will immediately available to view on a nice large laptop screen, or TV monitor.

For this headshot, it was helpful to review the photos on a large TV monitor. Accordingly, you can review your facial expression, wardrobe, and how they look on a chosen background. With attention to the background a clean white seamless is very easy to work with after the shoot. In this case, the realty office has a certain corporate background that the headshot will be placed. With this in mind, it was important to get a background that would be easy for them to cut out later.

Darker Background Headshots

For Dr. AK here, I gave him a choice of a lighter or darker background. In contrast to the white, these seem to have a more specular quality to them. However, both styles I think are very professional and will do the job of elevating your branding with a professional portrait.

As long as I have been making portraits, new year means new inquiries! 2017 January headshots requests are coming in like a needed resolution. Compared to most of my assignments, this the most different. For the most part, many of my subjects do not know that I am there. In other words, being quiet and non-distracting is a goal while I am working. This is surely not the case with headshots.

Although I am currently working on headshots, I am posting these sessions from last year. In general, I have a setup that I like to use that makes headshots flexible for lots of uses. As can be seen in these examples, I photograph you in front of a white seamless background. By and large this will work for most cases since you can easily remove the background.

Similarly, all of these examples are mobile lighting setups. If it is more convenient for your staff, I can bring my setup to where you are to get all the photos in one setting. Moreover, I find that some are more comfortable in their work space already, so it shows in their portraits! I’ll post soon with other examples from the studio for comparison. Happy new year!
