Jo and Claro Engagement Session

Washington, DC

Jo and Claro met me in downtown DC for some engagement photos. Claro and his family have been family friends for years. By comparison, we are Hokies, Filipino, and lived most of our lives in northern Virginia. He and his fiance Jo planned to marry last summer. When they thought about a photographer for their day, I came to mind. Of course, I jumped at the chance to cover this important event for them!

National Gallery of Art East Building

Our first stop was the National Gallery of Art. Seeing that it is a space to view large art installations, it is a beautiful space for portraits! The large open space with lots of natural light makes photos very easy. In addition, your subjects can move around freely and still be in nice even light.

We started in the East Building of the museum. Given that is a modern space with clean lines, we found plenty of places for photos. With this purpose in mind, we explored all the levels of the museum to find the best spots. In between the East and West building, there is a tunnel famous for posing subjects. Above a motorized walkway a many spot lights mimicking a symmetrical field of stars. Whenever I get a chance, I will bring subjects here. I have not fallen off of the walkway yet!

Lastly, there is collection of glass pyramids on the ground level outside of the West Building. As a matter of fact, it it right above the tunnel in the above photos. Putting them in between these glass sculptures creates some awesome reflections. In reality, it is producing a Photoshop-like effect right in the camera! Although we did not have to walk a long distance, we were able to get a lot of Jo and Claro engagement photos quickly.

Boyds, Maryland Wedding

Maryland wedding photography

Today is my 11th wedding anniversary! How appropriate that I will post some images from a recent wedding. These images tell the story of a beautiful late summer / early autumn Saturday. Friends and family gathered to see these two say their vows and celebrate a new marriage. I could not be there to make these photos as I was booked on another wedding, but luckily I have great colleagues that can go in my place that I trust. I love how these images turned out. In looking through them, I really regret that I could not have been there myself to photograph a lovely couple and their great group of friends. The Lodge at Little Seneca Creek in Boyds, Maryland was a nice setting both indoors and out to have the ceremony and reception. Enjoy!

Thanks to Bill from Bill Bauer Photography for the great images. It is always a blessing to have great colleagues and friends to work with. Also, thank you to my friend Nerea from Aeren Waters who recommended me to cover this wedding. Having work friends that keep you in mind for photography work is very helpful! Please check out her website to see her fashion work that she is creating. It is a completely different from her day job, but I know it is a great outlet for her creativity. I’ll have a blog post soon about her work. Now, I have to get ready for an anniversary dinner!

Fall Engagement photos

When the season start to change from Summer to Fall in northern Virginia, we are so lucky to have some beautiful light outside to make photos. These two asked me to make some engagement photos prior to their wedding next summer. With the sun going down earlier in the day, and the weather being a little milder, it was a perfect time to have a nice portrait session. Green Spring Park in Annandale, VA is a beautiful backdrop for photos. There is a lots of green areas, flowers, as well as structures that are perfect settings for all kinds of photos.

The 18th century historic home has beautiful red bricks and green shutters that are looks like printed backgrounds that photographers roll out in studios. Having the real thing to work with is much better! Although I was disappointed that a very large tree at the back of the house did not survive the last winter. But even the stump makes a great seat!
