DC Area Arthur Murray – Fall Freestyles

Tysons, Virginia

We are all packed up and ready to shoot the 2011 Fall Freestyles! On this occasion the venue is the Sheraton Premiere in Tysons Corner, VA. It will be another great event organized by the DC Area Arthur Murray dance studios. Although it has not started, we have a good idea on what to expect. Surely there will be enthusiastic students and instructors cheering on their friends.

Dancers will show off their hard work from the studio on the big floor. It is always a good time, and the dancers love to view their photos as we go through them. Obviously we can’t wait to get some great photos of the professional shows that cap the event on Saturday night. In general, I save portfolio images from these pro shows as they are the capstone for a weekend of dancing.

I hope to see you there! As soon as we finish photographing, I start the post processing which takes a few days. Photos from the event will be posted here by next week:

River City Ballroom Dance competition

Earlier this year, I photographed the River City Ballroom Dance competition in Richmond, VA for the second time. It is organized by Veronica and Lee at Simply Ballroom. On this occasion, it was held again at the Greater Richmond Convention Center conveniently located downtown. From there you have easy access to hotels, and restaurants. Moreover, there is plenty of room on the dance floor! The number of dancers doubled this year. With this in mind, there was plenty of opportunity for practice and comments from judges and other participants.

Prior to the start of the competition, we had a chance to catch up with familiiar friends. While some are from our home base in northern Virginia, some are local to Richmond. Especially the dancers from the host studio of Simply Ballroom. Veronica and Lee involve many of their students in the event. They are amazing hosts, and we look forward to our next trip south!

Danceflame.com portraits

Last week, I had the opportunity to photograph Marsha and Dmitry at the Regan Dance Center in Alexandria, VA.  They teach Ballroom, Latin, and Flamenco dancing classes for individuals and groups at the studio, and have an annual student Showcase to display their hard work! It is here that I first met them last year. As a couple, the also compete in professional ballroom dance competitions. For more information about lessons, their website is: Danceflame.com or you can follow them on Twitter @Danceflame.

This session was a lot of fun! It is something that I have wanted to try for a while. Photographing dancers while on the floor is so fast, and the challenge is to make a good exposure when they are in a good position compared to the camera. In the studio, dancers are always perfecting their body position, placing themselves into lines that are great for capturing with the camera. It was my turn to move the lights and change the power to create drama, emphasizing their poses. Thanks, Marsha, and Dmitry! I hope you enjoy the photos!
