Tysons, Virginia

Today is the last day to take advantage of the early bird sale of photos from the Arthur Murray Fall Freestyles! The DC Area studios came together at the McLean Hilton in Tysons Corner for 2 full days of dancing. The ballroom was filled with their friends cheering them on, and it made a great atmosphere for some great images. The sale is 15% off all products sold at the website including canvas prints, digital downloads and albums. If you have any questions on the options available for photos, please send me an email [ Rassi @ timelinedc.com ] or give me a call. I have answered lots of questions, and have even made some customizations for some who have specific requests. It is amazing what you can do with digital photos these days!

Viennese Waltz

Firstly, I wanted to remind you of the 2014 Fall Freestyles sale ending soon! The photos from today’s post are from a Viennese Waltz professional show by the Alexandria and the Tysons Corner studios. In this case, the fast waltz is beautiful to photograph with the color ballroom gowns that show off the movement of the dancers. Compared to the slow waltz, the Viennese Waltz has music with a faster tempo. Also, it is frequently danced with more modern tracks. This show was danced to “Fix A Heart” by Demi Lovato.

Obviously, This was one of our favorite shows from the evening. However, we are a bit biased as she is one of our teachers! She let us know that some of school figures she has been teaching in class will be part of the show. With this in mind, it made me pay attention a little more. To see all the photos from this show and all the other professional shows from the event, they are available to view at the proofing site. Photos from event prior to this one are still available as well.

This Monday is the last day to view Summer Showcase photos from the DC area Arthur Murray studios . Looking over my notes, there were a few of the shows that I still did not feature on the blog! I promise to get all of them on here, and I apologize for the delay. Today’s photos are from a Waltz by the Chevy Chase, MD studio. Of all the smooth dances, the Waltz is my current favorite. It will probably change as I get comfortable with a new figure, or hear an awesome Foxtrot musical track, but for now, I’m on a Waltz bandwagon! It is the first dance where I felt my partner and I could really move down the floor with a lot of distance. And it still feels “smooth” and flowing with less marching steps on each beat.

These two really took up the entire floor with their Waltz! It made for some easy photos at each click of the shutter. He really showed off the lady nicely! It can sometimes be a challenge to get both of their faces exposed to the camera in smooth dancing. But they both had showy, strong frames having good facial views for the audience.

Yes, I love the dip! A competition organizer pointed that out to me when I set out a collection of posters. The realization of it was shocking to me at the time, but I have embraced it. Especially when the back light shows up at just the right time. If that is a fault, I’ll take it! It’s important to realize you can be blind to tendencies looking at your work all the time!

Throwback Thursday – Dance Photography

After every dance event that we photograph, there are people that request photos from an event that we may have covered years ago. It is really interesting to go back and retrieve these old images! This is obviously nothing new. That is the magic of #TBT, Throwback Thursday, and photography in general. It is a new process for me as a professional photographer. These photos are not just snapshots of family, or places I have visited. For the most part, I do not know these people. They are dancers that we saw at only this event. Or maybe they stopped dancing soon after this competition.

Sometimes, though, there are people that have stayed with dancing, and still show up in our collections today! They are much better dancers, they have much better dresses, or costumes, and are now seasoned veterans to dancesport competitions. It is so much fun to find these connections in looking through old images!

From behind the camera, it is interesting to see my own changes. Just like the dancers improving their steps, there is an evolution in how I am capturing images. Yes, there are some technical changes as camera bodies are changed, but I like the more creative changes. I shift my lighting setup, I move my perspective to the dance floor, and I stylistically change my compositions in how I like to capture dancers.

Sometimes, I have gone back to some old techniques when I review these. Maybe some tweaks are added here and there, but it is a cool part of the process of really concentrating on making images. There is still so much I want to learn and improve on with my photos! it is a struggle to be sure, but looking back really helps me to see how I have already improved, and pushes me to find the next level with an upcoming opportunity.
