American Star Ball – Familiar Faces

Honestly – I am buckling down with the edits for last weekend’s event! I am on track to finish these to view by this weekend. For today’s post, I decided to finally post a preview of the dance action photos. It was nice to see some familiar faces out there! This was the fourth year we have photographed the American Star Ball, and we have always been received nicely by the dancers at this event. Now that they have seen us a few times, I think they like the photos we make. Here are some of the image from the Saturday night professional competition heats. We were introduced to ballroom dance at the Arthur Murray studio in Tysons Corner, VA. Steve Theiss also gave me the first opportunity to photograph ballroom dancing, and now we are invited to shoot many other events. It is nice, though to see other Arthur Murray dancers on the floor, so we cheered for them while taking photos. Enjoy!

American Star Ball – Judges and Volunteers

I am almost halfway through the photos from last weekend. I am still on track to get these done and posted on time, so please stay tuned – I know you will like these! Of course, the dancers are the focus for most of the photos at ballroom dance events. However, I also like getting photos of judges, officials, and other volunteers that are in the ballroom all weekend. They also put in so much work to make sure these events run smoothly. This competition was well organized, and I’m sure the dancers appreciated everything running on time. Here are a few of the photos from just around the dance floor.

Amanda and Ilya were terrific hosts to the dancers that attended. Throughout the event, they were constantly visible in the ballroom checking in on how things were going. American Star Ball – Awards

Editing is progressing on the images from last weekend. At first, I worked on the awards lineup. Afterwards all the photos will be posted to the proofing website here when completed:

Why these line up photos first? It is one way that I break up the job of post processing the images. In my Lightroom software, you can separate all the photo by metadata. In this case, I start with images that have one aspect different from all of the others. With this in mind, the lineup photos have a completely different shutter speed from the action photos on the dance floor. So these are selected first for editing from an event.

Stay tuned here on the blog for updates. In the meantime, here are all the photos from the awards. This was in fact the first competition that had a dedicated area for lineups. As can be seen the step and repeat was very wide to accommodate a large group. Since the organizers provided their own light around the area, these photos were easy to make. Enjoy!
