Ballroom dance – portrait photos

Arthur-Murray-Ashburn-group-photo-www.timelinedc.com

If you have never been to a ballroom dance event, you have missed a feast for the eyes and ears. If you enjoy music, the high volume of instrumentals and vocals will call you to the ballroom if you are anywhere within earshot. When you venture towards the sounds, the music will get louder, there will be screams of encouragement from the audience. Then the visuals will hit you. There are colorful ballroom gowns, dancers moving confidently across the floor. Moreover the flash bulbs firing off from the audience – it is a lot to take in!

Portraits

I remember  my first time entering such an event. It was overwhelming, and being a first-time participant, I was definitely anxious about getting out on the floor. This is what makes photographing ballroom dance so compelling. There are a million things going through the minds of dancers; there is a coordinated dance behind the scenes to keep the event moving from the organizers, and it all plays out in front of a live audience consisting of your dancing friends and other supporters in the crowd.

After being in a ballroom for a few minutes, you can easily see how photographers can end up with thousands of photos after a weekend. The action photos of dancers take the bulk of the collection, but there are times during small breaks in the action, that you can capture some really nice portraits. All the cameras are set up, so why not take a break from the normal photos, and grab other interesting shots. After the main dancing was over, I will setup a light or two outside to get some posed photos of dancers and other guests, so come and visit me if you’d like one! Here are some of my favorites from the recent Arthur Murray Spring Freestyles. Enjoy!

Arthur Murray Spring Freestyles photos released!

The photos from last weekend’s DC Area Arthur Murray Spring Freestyles have been released to the website here:

I am emphatically happy to have these up there to share! There are over 6500 images for the event, but we have sorted them all by studio as best we could. There may be some misplaced people in there, and there are a few that we could not identify – sorry! If you know where they belong, please send me an email – rassi at timelinedc.com. If there are some dancers that are in the wrong studio, please let me know that too, so we can put them in the right spot.

It was a great event from beginning to end, and we tried to capture as much of the dancing as we could. If you missed out on the excitement this time, be sure to join us for the Summer Showcase coming up June 22, 2013. It will also be held at the Hilton McLean in Tysons Corner, VA. We plan on being there to get more routines, All-around competition, and more professional shows. In the meantime, here are some photos from a professional showcase performed by Arthur Murray – Virginia Beach. Enjoy!

Spring Freestyles editing

Tysons, Virginia

The photos are coming along nicely from last weekend’s Spring Freestyles. I am still editing and am coming across some cool images! There are some new things that I have not seen or noticed in ballroom dance photos previously. I’ll write about it more in a future blog post, but for now, I must get back to Lightroom! Photos will be uploaded to the proofing site by this Saturday-

Now that I am home from the event, I am thankful for the help last weekend! To cover these is a big job requiring a lot of stamina from photographers. Although it can be one of the best assignments with all of the great music, and the enthusiastic energy in the ballroom. Have you ever attended these events previously? I would like to receive some feedback on my photos and how they capture the event. Obviously I think they do capture the dancing well, but does it relate to a larger audience at all? Since I am embedded in all of these, I don’t know how they would come off to someone that was not there. Or to someone that is unfamiliar with the dance scene in our area.
