Waltz Showcase – Smooth Professional Show

Today’s photos are from the last show not yet featured from the DC Area Arthur Murray Fall Showcase. If I forgot any of them, I would not be able to keep my reputation. Moreover, I would probably hear about it from the studios! Since the next Arthur Murray even that we are scheduled to cover is this upcoming weekend, I need to post this quick! This show was a beautiful Waltz by the Chevy Chase, Maryland studio.

Tavia and Austin have performed many shows over the years, and I have enjoyed the photos I get from all of them. Whether rhythm or smooth, these two capture the audience attention and hold them for their performances. The music chosen was the haunting “My Love” by Sia.

The pairing of this song with their dancing was amazing. This was one time I wish I could share a video of the dance along with the photos as in this instance, I wish I could have produce both moving and still pictures of this show. Like the music lyrics, the dance seems to have many meanings depending on interpretation of the viewer or listener. However you see the meaning, the dancers hushed the audience, and you could feel the quiet parts of the music as no one wanted to make a sound until they were sure that the piece was completed. It was a compliment to their work in preparing this show, and hope to see more from them at future events.

Nina and Dmitriy Kovalenko – Professional Dance Showcase

Cha Cha Professional Latin Showcase - ©TimeLine Media

What way to finish a great day of dancing! Nina and Dmitry put on an exciting showcase for everyone at the end of this year’s Baltimore Dancesport Challenge. The crowd, being very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about Latin dancing, really got into the five pieces that they presented. Today’s post is from the first of the five, a cha-cha to Michael Jackson’s “Smooth Criminal”.

These two are so quick with their movements. Her colorful and shiny dress really added to the flashy look of the movements. They connected with the crowd with lots of eye contact, and expression in their faces. The routine was nicely coordinated with the music. If you are inclined, you can see all of these in video form provided by Miller Productions at the Pabon Productions YouTube channel.

In the video, you will get a glimpse of me on the floor following them with my camera. Having both the video and still photos can show how differently I can make the scene look with lighting and lenses. From my vantage point from down low, the dancers take on a larger presence than from above making for better “hero” angles than if I were to shoot them standing, being on their same level.

It was really fun to try to keep up with these two! The auto focus on the camera was working hard, thankfully the advancements in tracking focus has really made this a breeze from the photographer’s point of view. You can see from the video how many times my flash went off. Every single photo had them in focus. If I did not include a photo in the collection, it was due to composition, or angle to the dancers being off, not to anything technical with the camera gear. It is always nice to reconnect with familiar faces and see what new figures and routines you have been working on with your instructors. We enjoyed seeing the new dresses, and some dancers as well. There was plenty of time for some general dancing which had some judges out on the floor –

And also resulted in an epic Conga line that invaded the podium during a break in the action –

There were some beautiful take-home trophies for top students and teachers provided by Preciosa –

The end of the event was capped by a fantastic pro show by Nina and Dmitriy Kovalenko! I will definitely post more about their performances in future posts. It was a lot of fun to try to keep up with these two on the floor. Thank goodness my camera was ready!
