Arthur Murray Poster Contest Winners – DC Area Photography

Arthur Murray Dance Studios - Columbia, MD - ©TimeLine Media

Last Friday I counted the votes from the first TimeLine Media photo poster contest. On the Facebook page, I posted 6 different posters from the Arthur Murray Fall Showcase. There were so many great shows, and we only have a limited space in which to display photos at the next event. The dancers that present these shows are the capstone to the events, and they look great printed large!

We have been featuring these dancers for a few years now that we have been covering the events. Now, we wanted to reach out to our social network to get input on which of the photos we should print for display. It was fun to see the votes come in and to see the comments from students, other teachers, and their Facebook friends! In the end, there were 2 clear winners for our first contest. The winners were the posters from the Columbia, Maryland studio, and the Tysons Corner, Virginia studio! The other photos will not go to waste, however. We will print the other studios onto event cards that will hopefully remind dancers to come back to the proofing website to view their photos.

Thanks to everyone that voted, and spread the word of upcoming events through their Facebook! We enjoy making these posters, and we hope that more people were able to view them through the sharing. To see the posters in person, we will display them at the Arthur Murray Spring Freestyles coming up March 28 – 29, 2014 at the Marriott Westfields in Chantilly, VA. After the event, the posters will be going to their respective studios. See you on the dance floor!

Headshots – Northern Virginia DC Photographer

Spring is coming soon – hopefully! We had another bout with the snow yesterday, so I had plenty of time to edit photos inside. Every so often, it is good to update your headshots. I have plenty of different images that I use for avatars and profile photos. These are from many test shoots before my clients arrive. I use myself to test lights. Thus, I end up with lots of images to choose from in the collection. This day was no different – T. and I have been coordinating a shoot. Before she arrived, I setup the lights and the background. With the small space that I was working with, I decided to use the beauty dish for the main light on the subject. This modifies produces a very nice quality of light for faces, and there is a huge drop off from the subject keeping the light from illuminating the background cloth.

Keeping the light off the background is important to separate your subject from the background. It works really well for portraits as it gives your subject some space in the photo. This is a piece of feedback I give to a lot of photographers when viewing their portfolios. When you are taking the time to pose a subject, and you are trying to find the best angle to place them for a photo, do not place them too close to a background element. This could include walls, plants, statues, or anything that is behind them. When you place your subjects there, you can get some strong shadows behind your subjects from a flash, and your background will be in sharp focus. I try to minimize both when making portraits – I want the subject to not have any competition from distractions in the background. If you need an updated headshot, contact me at 703-864-8208 or Rassi at timelinedc.com and we can discuss what I can produce for you!

Triple Swing – Professional Showcase

Arthur Murray - Alxandria, VA - ©TimeLine Media

Who is ready for a triple swing? In reviewing old blog posts, I found that there are still some professional shows that I have not posted about from the Arthur Murray Fall Showcase. There was a large number of shows from this event! To be sure I do not want to leave any of the dancers out! They are too nice to ask when their featured photos will show up. With this in mind I have gone back to make note of which ones I have not blogged yet.

Today’s show was a triple swing performed by the Arthur Murray franchised dance studio in Alexandria, VA. They danced to a popular song at the studios – “Lollipop.” I recall dancing a showcase routine to this a few years ago – it has a quick tempo requiring you to keep steps compact. It is also a challenge to dance at that tempo for the entire length of the song which these two did very well! They even though in a lift in the middle just to up the ante even more. The fun lollipop prop and dress really brought out the whimsical feel of the dance that the audience responded to nicely.

After post this, there are only two other shows from this event that I have not posted on the blog. I am thinking about having a Facebook poll about the photos from each show. We only have a limited space to hang posters from the previous event’s professional shows, so we need to narrow down the candidates soon. Stay tuned here to find out more on how we decide to print these. Thanks!
