Heroic 3D Titles | Tech Tuesday

Dance Photo Posters

I had a record number of votes for the Arthur Murray professional show posters at the Facebook page! These featured an action photo from each of the dances performed with the dancers popped out in color. Additionally, I left the the monochrome background. On this occasion, I wanted to identify each of the studios that the dancers represented. Also, I wanted to make a new design for the titles. For the most part, I have a font with some kind of layer style applied in Photoshop. In many blog posts and videos online, I have seen a lot of features added to the 3D panel in Photoshop. Additionally that can make editable text into 3D models that can be easily added across multiple images.

The 3D extrusion function was introduced in the CS6 version of Adobe Photoshop. Since it has been a few versions now, the technology has really evolved quickly, and is quite powerful for those that know what they are doing. I am just dipping my toe into this section, so I still in the hunting, testing, and experimenting phase. That being the case, I was really impressed with how easy and fast the 3D works in Photoshop CC 2014!

Start by making a simple text layer on a dark, contrasted background. Clicking on the 3D Menu, then “New 3D Extrusion from Selected Layer” will transform the text layer into a 3D object. This is now the ultimate Smart Object! Viewing the 3D panel, and the Properties panel, you will notice a large number of options to manipulate the design from here.

From here, you can change the rotation of the text, the depth of the 3D object, and the angle of the text to the view. And this is all by the clicking and holding the mouse and dragging it around the screen! It does not take much to produce some nice dimensional effects for titles. In future entries, I’ll post more about the details that I played around with to get the final versions. However, I’ll start with the basics to get others playing around with 3D just for the fun of it!

Awards plaques

I am currently working on finishing the award plaques from the recent 2013 DC Dance Challenge. This event from last month had some great participation from all the dancers. However there were a few that were recognized for their technique in their categories. Although we could not provide plaques for the dancers to take home from the Ronald Reagan Building that evening, I think the results are better now. This is due to me having edited all the photos for the event for color and exposure. The photos that are used from the plaques are made from photos that were made at the event on the dance floor or the surrounding area at the venue.

I am much more pleased with how these have turned out since they are produced at the same lab that I send print and album orders. The quality of the print is just as good as these since they are optical prints from the digital files, not prints from an ink jet printer. If you see these plaques up close, you can tell the difference. They will last much longer than ink jet prints, and have much better contrast and saturation of color. Here is a scan of one that is completely assembled.

The picture is mounted onto a wooden frame, and mounted underneath a clear plastic. The plaque is cut on the back with some holes for easy mounting to the wall. I really like how these come out, and I hope the dancers like the presentation. It’s a great way to show off their accomplishments!

Tysons, Virginia

If you have recently been to the Tysons Corner Center in McLean, VA, you may have noticed the new HGTV pop-up store that has opened in the Fashion Court near Bloomingdale’s and L.L. Bean. This showroom has many examples of the latest materials and designs for home furnishings featured on their television network.

Inside the store is an array of resources for your home design needs. There are designers available to discuss your specific projects, and they can show you examples of paint, flooring, and lighting right in the store. On Saturday, this was a busy place. Lots of guests came by to feel the materials hanging in the displays, and getting ideas on how to change their interiors.

Just outside the store by the elevator, HGTV has also setup some furniture and displays with their programming. Resting shoppers can be inspired by more of their design choices. They have a nice D.C. autumn backdrop where you can make photo and send to your email with their photo booth!

It is here that designer Taniya Nayak made an appearance to meet fans of her shows. She took lots of time to meet with everyone that waited in line to see her. Some brought pictures of their on-going projects to get ideas. With each one that came by, she took lots of time to meet, sign autographs, and give her design advice.

It was a pleasure to meet her and the staff that worked at the pop-up showroom. If you are in the middle of a home design project, you should definitely stop by before November 8. The store will then move on from this location, so take advantage of the opportunity before then!
